Iraq: The race for the Premiership
Shiite sources say four Shiite personalities are presumably in the running for the Premiership: Ibrahim Jaafari, Adel Abdulmahdi, Ahmad Chalabi and Iyad Allawi. According to these sources, the chances of Jaafari saving his job as PM are not yet clear.

He needs the list of the “United Iraqi Alliance” to score a sweeping victory similar to January’s elections, Adel Abdlumahdi to withdraw from the race for the Premiership, and the Kurds to grant him support.

Kurdish officials have so far declined to express their views about Jaafari, but KDP and PUK sources mention the Kurds may not support him this time.

2. Adel Abdulmahdi is like a somewhat more secular and smarter
version of Jaafari.

3. Our friend Chalabi is back.
He is certainly a resilient fellow. Wasn't the U.S. supposed to arrest him a while back?

4. as if Allawi and Chalabi have a chance in hell in an unrigged election
good thing for Dubya, though - there isn't a chance in hell they WON'T have a rigged election.

I betcha one of the weak Shia puppets gets the spot. with Chalabi or Allawi being given some kind of high-ranking post each in the guise of a "coalition" government or something. A coalition of marionettes.

5. Classic choice of "Lesser of the Evils"
Without the Bush Regime support these characters would be fleeing Iraq or be killed.
