Iraq Hit by String of Deadly Explosions (soldier dead)
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=540&ncid=716&e=3&u=/ap/20031030/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq

<snip>BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq (news - web sites) was hit by a string of explosions Thursday that set a freight train on fire, killed a U.S. soldier in a military convoy and ripped through Baghdad's Old Quarter. Another blast injured two U.S. soldiers on a military police patrol.

The attacks came as international organizations continued their exodus from Iraq and the U.N. secretary-general warned of "a new phase" in postwar violence.

A top U.S. diplomat blamed al-Qaida for recent attacks, and in Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s hometown of Tikrit, U.S. soldiers raided six houses after receiving tips that the inhabitants were helping establish a "new terrorist network" there, a military spokesman said.

2. the schools may be open but no one is going to school...
from the end of the article....
<snip>
The escalating violence has unnerved many of Baghdad's 5 million people. Many parents are not sending their children to school for fear of further bombings.

"Today most of my friends did not come to school," said 18-year-old Duha Khalid at the Al-Khalisa girl's high school, located near a police station. "We heard rumors about big bombs that will go off at the start of next week."

6. Interesting use of the word "terror" these days
"A top U.S. diplomat blamed al-Qaida for recent attacks, and in Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s hometown of Tikrit, U.S. soldiers raided six houses after receiving tips that the inhabitants were helping establish a "new terrorist network" there, a military spokesman said. "

Iraqis fighting to dislodge an invader are "terrorists", according to the DimSon administration. I knew that I'd seen this verbage before, but I had to dig into some old Poli/Sci books from college (I was a PoliticalScience/Russian Studies double major).

And there it was. It turns out that the occupying German forces in Warsaw, Poland were having a hard time with Jewish "terrorists" - that culminated in a "terrorist" counterinsurgency (read that Warsaw Ghetto Uprising).

Those damned "terrorists". Always messing things up, aren't they.

9. Baghdad On Edge - CBS
As a campaign of terror bombs and escalating attacks on American troops heightened tensions, rumors of looming trouble spread through Baghdad on Thursday.

One leaflet on the streets, purporting to be from the deposed Saddam Hussein's Baath Party, called for a general strike Saturday through Monday "to prove to our enemy that we are united people." The leaflet also said the day will mark the start of some kind of uprising.

10. Baghdad on edge as unrest continues - MSGOP
Many parents apparently were keeping their children home from school out of fear of further bombings like the four that killed three dozen people and wounded more than 200 across the city on Monday, start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
“We heard rumors about big bombs that will go off,” said Duha Khalid, 18, most of whose friends stayed home Thursday from her girls’ high school, near a police station.
The police, prime targets in the bombings Monday, were targeted again Thursday, when officers intercepted a motorist who tried to toss a hand grenade into a police station on the edge of Baghdad’s heavily guarded “green zone,” headquarters enclave for the U.S. occupation.

Did you hear? Halliburton/Harken/Carlyle Condos will be built in the Green Zone which will then be renamed to the Red/Blood Zone.
