CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Wild horse advocates fear a proposed management plan that would reduce land set aside for animals in the Pine Nut Mountains would result in more government roundups and fewer horses.
A tentative proposal in the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's Pine Nut resource management plan would cut the 98,600-acre herd area by 21 percent.
Officials concede that could prompt a corresponding reduction in the number of wild horses. The herd management area covers parts of Douglas and Lyon counties and Carson City.
Tom Crawford of the BLM's Carson City district office said development in the Dayton area and worries about sage grouse habitat prompted resource specialists to look seriously at reducing horse numbers.
