Judge: Campaign finance law will not take effect this election
November 19, 2005

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- A judge has ruled that a portion of the state's campaign finance law will not be applied this election period while the enitre law is being challenged in U.S. Supreme Court.

Defendants argued that part of the law, which would restrict political party contributions to $400, should take effect while the court hears the case.

"For now things are going to remain the same as they have for the last few election cycles," said Assistant Attorney General Tim Tomasi, who is defending the law. "It's certainly understandable why the court might decide to keep the status quo for the time being."

The court will decide whether provisions in Vermont's campaign finance that would cap spending in races for governor at $300,000 per candidate, with smaller caps for other state offices, are constitutional.
