ILOILO CITY-Nine soldiers were killed and 18 others were wounded when suspected communist New People's Army (NPA) rebels ambushed government troops in Barangay (village) Catagan in Calinog town, Iloilo around 8 pm Saturday, said Major Lyndon Sollesta, 3rd Infantry Division spokesperson.

The rebels detonated at least one landmine before firing at troops belonging to the 47IB and the elite 1st Scout Ranger Battalion who were aboard two trucks. The soldiers were returning from patrol operations when ambushed.

Troops on board the second truck that was not hit by the landmine managed to fire back during an hour-long firefight. There were no reports of casualties on the side of the rebels who are believed to have fled to the mountainous areas in the boundary of Iloilo and Capiz provinces.

The rebels are believed to be part of the NPA unit under the Communist Party of the Philippines' Central Front Committee, said Sollesta.

The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines and has been waging a decades-long insurgency in the Philippine countryside.

1. Cop killed, 3 others hurt in NPA clash
Second breaking story from the Philippines. President Arroyo, a Bush shill, has been waging war against the Muslims and the Marxists, rejecting several proposals for peace in the past. Arroyo has had the support of US Special Forces training her military. Looks like another war of national liberation has just got hotter.

4. BBC: Philippines troops die in ambush

Philippines troops die in ambush

At least nine soldiers have been killed and 20 wounded in a rebel ambush in the Philippines, the army has announced.

Their truck was hit by a crude land mine late on Saturday as they were returning to base near Calinog town.

The left-wing rebels then sprayed the survivors with gunfire, leading to a one-hour shootout before the attackers retreated, an army spokesman said.

In a separate attack several hours later, a policeman was killed and three were wounded in Quezon province.

The army blamed both attacks on the Maoist New People's Army (NPA), which has been fighting the central government since the 1960s.
