Security officials are preparing for a surge in violence against coalition forces in Iraq within the next few days after receiving information that supporters of Sadjdam Hussein, the ousted president, may be intending to co-ordinate a series of attacks in Baghdad.

Three days of violence are said by sources linked to the former president's Ba'ath party to be in the final planning stage, according to Security officials in Iraq yesterday.

Foreign companies have tightened security measures and are convinced that the information received on the impending attacks is reliable.

The United Nations announced yesterday that it was temporarily withdrawing 30 expatriate staff from Baghdad, though it was not clear whether specific intelligence had been received suggesting that the UN was a target. On August 19, a truck bomb killed 22 people at the UN headquarters in the city.

Information suggesting that a series of attacks may be mounted by supporters of the ousted regime emerged as aUS official identified Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, Mr Hussein's former deputy, as the Saddam loyalist who is now co-ordinating violence against coalition forces and Iraqis working with the US-led operation in Iraq.

Are they making it up (so they look less clueless if something
does happen)?

They are offering a reward for help on the Gaza bombing now, what
more evidence can you have that they are without clue?
