Jessica Lynch named Glamour "Woman of the Year"
Mods: No headline supplied with this story originally.
http://www.nydailynews.com/business/story/132300p-118061c.html

... Among the ever-growing number of magazine-sponsored awards, Glamour's Women of the Year event stands out each year for its mix of famous and lesser-known achievers.

... Ex-POW Jessica Lynch and her fellow captive in Iraq, Spec. Shoshona Johnson, along with Pfc. Lori Piestewa, who was killed when they were taken, will be singled out by ABC's Diane Sawyer.

U.S. Army Private Jessica Lynch and U.S. Army Specialist Shoshana Johnson are shown together in this handout photograph. Lynch and Johnson, whose ordeals as POWs during the war in Iraq (news - web sites) gained national attention, have been named Glamour Magazine's 2003 Women of the Year and will appear in the December issue of the magazine. 2. FWIW, Glamour runs liberal, so I'll forgive them for this.
At least Johnson made the list as well. They prob gave it to Lynch out of necessity.

5. Nice to see Johnson smiling
Boy, I'll never forget the still from the footage the Iraqis broadcast. The look on her face--haunting.

8. good for them..
It is not Jessica's fault that BushCo. hyped her rescue and tried to use it as propaganda.

I am glad she made it out alive and is doing well.

11. Ummm... Does Jessica Lynch really exist?
There's been a lot said ABOUT her, but not a lot FROM her. Some girl was in a parade that was supposed to be Jessica Lynch, but I'm not sure.

Does Jessica Lynch really exist, or is she just a creature created by propaganda? Does anyone actually know her?

13. Oh, war is so glamorous
For every photo run of this agit-prop patriotism-porn pin up, that's one less we see of a legless soldier laying on a cot in Baghdad.

16. Very important to point out that they honor Lynch AND Johnson
KCDem made the point earlier; there's no headline to this article, but it's important to point out that Glamour Magazine didn't choose Lynch over Johnson in their "Women of the Year" citings.

I'd be very curious to see who else they chose, but I'm not upset that they chose these two unwillingly-hyped soldiers.

If I were a woman, I'd be pissed! According to Glamour, this is as good as it got for women in 2003?

On edit: I hadn't read the link. So at least they're honoring other women for real achievement.

20. when a military person with dubious and questionable war time
achievements is named "woman of the year" by a well known, long standing woman's mag, this tells me something-it tells me more than just one thing--it is shallow, it is making money off warmongering, making war glamerous, it is ignoring women who have made peaceful and useful contributions to this country instead of shooting up Iraq on a bunch of lies. I admit it is better than naming the frump lump, but there is something sad about this to me. Yes they all make money-- Jessica also---and some say they don't blame her--I have to think about whether or not I can make a judgement on Jessica's jumping on the bandwagon--in the picture, there seems to be something sad in her eyes--and she is very young.

23. A family buried their 19 year old daughter not far from where I live
she was an US Army MP killed in a mortar attack on an Iraq police station. She had just returned to duty after being wounded. Her mother tried to convince her not to join, but she kept the family military tradition alive. 19 years old. But not Woman of the year. Another post-conflict casualty.

Women of the Year?
Why single out only the ones who survived ??

Seems to me that giving your life is above and beyond the call of duty and should at least be recognized somehow.....

(The catty side of me thought right away that Glamor gave it to Jessica cause she looked like she had mega makeup on in the rescue photos and I thought gee...you know...GLAMOUR magazine?...well...nevermind.....this is not a Jessica slam...I feel for her being caught up in something way way beyond her)

The world just ain't right anymore....

Peace
