Carter expects son to win: Ex-president endorses Las Vegan's potential bid
November 23, 2005
Las Vegas--
A day after his appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," President Carter was still deadpan funny Tuesday as he glowingly endorsed his son for the U.S. Senate.

"Of course, I've known Jack since he was born," Carter told reporters before signing copies of his new book, "Our Endangered Values," at the Borders bookstore on Decatur Boulevard in Las Vegas.

Jack Carter, a 58-year-old commodities trader who has lived in Las Vegas since 2002, is exploring a bid for the Senate against John Ensign, who is up for re-election next year.

Carter said his son will probably reach his decision in January. If he runs, the elder Carter said he would campaign for him and expects to be part of a winning connection.

1. Ensign has done little for the state and the way things are going...
with a strong campaign, Jack Carter will become a Senator.

8.  Jack Carter criticizes president at Elko stop
ELKO -- Jack Carter directed criticism at the Bush administration instead of Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., at a stop Saturday in Elko designed to gauge support for a run for the U.S. Senate.

Carter, the son of former President Carter, said he would announce in a month whether he'll challenge Ensign, who's seeking a second term in 2006.

Accompanied by wife Elizabeth, Carter addressed about 35 people at a meeting of the Elko County Democratic Central Committee.

His appearance in the Republican stronghold 290 miles east of Reno marked his first official exploratory campaign stop in the state. Voter registration in Nevada is split almost evenly between Democrats and Republicans.

12. I hope that Nevadans...
will be watching out for Republican front-groups offering to register voters and then throwing out the voter registrations who check 'Democratic' on the party affiliation box and that judges who have the opportunity to do so extend voter registration to the day of the election in such an eventuality that such shenanigans are widespread.

Also, I hope Jack Carter does a better job realizing that those Asian would be Democratic voters in the Las Vegas area that don't read or speak English need pamphlets made out in Korean, not Chinese than Kerry did.

14. And perhaps Tagalog as well.
Large Filipino population here, though I live less than a block from the nearest Korean Presbyterian Church.

I think Las Vegas will be even more organized and volunteer-oriented than in 2004. I've no quantitative evidence to support that theory, but it is my gut feeling.

15. ..no kidding. Did that happen? Anyway, this is the first I've heard
of Jack Carter. Good for him in trusting the people to take him for who he is. The Swift Boaters will be after him. I hope Reid is behind him. Jimmy seems to think so.

16. SHIT? He was signing books! DAMNIT!
:argh:

My mom asked for a copy of his new book for Christmas ... that would have been perfect! Plus, I could have added it to my collection of presidentially-autographed books (which, currently, consists soley of "My Life").

Shit, I would have just liked to have shaken the man's hand.

Former President's Son May Run for Senate

Wednesday November 30, 2005 6:01 AM

By KATHLEEN HENNESSEY

Associated Press Writer

LAS VEGAS (AP) - The son of former President Jimmy Carter has launched a Web site soliciting donations for a possible run for U.S. Senate.

Jack Carter, 58, called the site part of his ``listening tour'' designed to gauge support for a potential bid to challenge Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev.

``One of the things you listen for is how are people going to contribute,'' he said Tuesday.

It would be the Las Vegas investment consultant's first personal foray in politics. He previously campaigned for his father.

Carter said he will not officially announce his decision until after the first of the year, but he said response to the site, which was posted last week, was ``excellent.''
