Welcome moist weather pushes flames from homes

By Brian Skoloff
Associated Press

BIG BEAR LAKE -- Fog and drizzle came to the rescue of firefighters who made progress Thursday toward saving resort towns in Southern California from raging wildfires that have killed at least 20 people.

"It is helping but it is a long way from putting any fires out," said Ray Snodgrass, chief deputy director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. "It's the respite we were hoping for."
<snip>

In all, nearly 13,000 firefighters and support personnel were fighting what Gov. Gray Davis said could be the worst and costliest disaster California has ever faced.

The state is spending an estimated $9 million a day fighting the wildfires. The total cost of fighting the blazes could reach $200 million, while the blazes take a $2 billion toll on the California economy, state officials said.

ok, let's do the math... if it costs california 2 billion in economic losses, and california is the fourth largest economy in the world, should bush have given them the funds they requested to clear out the beetle-infested dead wood that davis begged for 6 months ago and bush finally denied only hours before the blazes erupted? davis asked for $430 million. see what happens when you protect the people on the cheap while rewarding giant corporations with billions for contributing a half a million to your campaign?

1. Let's hope those fires are out soon
They need to be out before the Santa Anas return.
