Clinton at Yale pushes globalization, knocks Bush

NEW HAVEN — President Clinton in a speech at Yale Friday shared his world vision of a 21st Century that is built on cooperation and sharing, a vision he said is more likely to strengthen our security than the course the country is presently charting.

"My philosophy is the United States should cooperate with others whenever we can … and act alone only if we have to. In the current government, the conservatives, at least, believe that we should act alone whenever we can and cooperate when we have to," Clinton told the enthusiastic crowd of several thousand seated at Woolsey Hall.

To a student’s pessimistic query of how to battle what he perceived as a right-leaning uncritical media and the Republican dominance of the federal government, Clinton advised to fight against it.

"Instead of being bereft, go work for someone who wants to do something different and turn it around," the president said, pointing to the energy surrounding the presidential campaigns of Democrats Howard Dean and Gen. Wesley Clark.

I like it. :)

3. The irony is too delicious!
The photo of Clinton in the middle of students wanting to shake his hand just emphasizes the fact that Bush can't go ANYWHERE near the general public!

I love the ending of this article, it says it all, imo! Clinton is still loved!

"Clinton worked the crowd near the stage at the end of his talk, while students scrambled over seats to get closer to him to take a photo or shake his hand.

Alan Kennedy Schaffer, 19, a Yale sophomore, gave Clinton’s address high marks, particularly his advice to get involved.

"He made us feel we can do something about the world," Schaffer said.

Alderwoman Andrea Jackson Brooks, D-4th, said, "he can be my president again in a drop of the hat. He’s an unbelievable contrast to what we have now."

5. Same thing happened when he came to UF
The place was packed and you would have thought a rock star had entered the room when he came on. The whole place was roaring. It was great.

11. I was watching PBS last night and they were showing Bush
in Australia giving a speech to the govt. Some of the Australian politicians stood up and started shouting at him! Bush didn't know what to do, which was evident by his startled reaction and his stupid giggle! It was hilarious to watch! At least our past president (who still continues to take the blame for our problems) is still very well loved and admired! They have to pack the place with hand selected candidates when Bush go to speak.

4. Bill and Hilary
There is a great story I heard about Bill and later Hilary on visits to Louisville. A local policeman, who was a former FBI agent, was assigned to protect Bill Clinton on a visit to Kentucky. The policeman was no fan of the President; in fact he actively disliked him. By the time the two days were over, this former Clinton-hater was so impressed with Bill that he was singing his praises everywhere. Later he was assigned to Hilary and found her to be a great lady, who was fair and open (and a smoker.)

22. I Remember The Time A Local Cop Sat On His Glock
In Louisville, KY on the Presidential Detail and recieved a self-inflicted injury in a very embarrassing place.

It didn't take a 25,000 man Security Detail to tell the Cop to lose weight, not place the pistol where the rolls of fat could activate the grip safety and trigger at the same time or one Agent to wake Bill up over a simple accident.

God, how I miss those days...!

6. What has this got to do...
...with globalisation? I agree with Clinton's words but whatever he's talking about, it's not globalisation. Globalisation is little more than the IMF and World Bank telling developing countries what to do economically (read: privatise national infrastructure so that Western companies can buy them) allowing them to be in debt forever.

8. Your definition of
globalization is the one that's wrong.

Dump the 60's rhetoric, and move into the 21st century.

10. Interesting
I'm paraphrasing Joseph Stiglitz (chief economist of the World Bank until 2000) BTW. Could you provide me with links or book references that support your assertion?

15. Your definition is indeed correct.
Here's a fun quiz for pro-Globalizationists: what is the "IMF Riot"?

(Google hint: Greg Palast)

25. LOL! I suspect Nobel Laureate Stiglitz is the better authority.
Maple: you might want to read what Stiglitz has to say about our role in the world.

Perhaps you've "moved into the 21st century" a bit prematurely? ;-)

13. Well, now that you mention it,
what is the current definition of globilization? If it means solving AIDS problems in Africa, because we're all interconnected, then I'm for that. If it means free market and outsourcing jobs to India, I'm a'gin it.

21. That is so far off the mark..
that it deserves little comment. Clinton is an American and that is the working definition here. I have no idea what you consider globalization to be in your country but let Bill speak about his. Nuff said.

27. Globalization means different things to different people.
Some people use it as a straw man to demonize everything that they dislike about the way the world is going, some pro-globalists even try to use the term as shorthand for everything good about the way the world is going.

For me it is simply a means to an end that does not take any notice of national borders, and the challenge is not to resist globalization but to use it. My communication with you lot on the net is an example of globalization, as are the global anti-war protests, increased trade, easier access to different cultures etc. And oddly enough the best thing that can be done for the 3rd world IMHO is to globalize our agriculture and textile trades by giving protectionist agriculture policies the boot so that poor nations can trade with us more easily.

9. God I miss Clinton...
Unfortunately, we have seen that most conservatives view of how they want the world to be is ugly beyond imagining. Next to Bush, Clinton is a saint, IMO. Great article!

competition is. The USA cannot handle it. That is the problem.

Globalization is not at all of the same mold as NAFTA.

23. globalization stinks bcz instead of bringing 3rd world UP to our standard
of living, the WTO and the "third way"(read Big Dawg's DLC)
and the current administration and the corporations with no
allegiance to Amerca are bent on bringing US earnings DOWN
to the third world level - and destroying the middle class.
Destroying the Middle Class means destroying the American dream.

In that way there is no difference between the DLC and the GOP
and its the only thing I hold against Big Dawg.

We can't contain the "corporations" and their abuses on our own turf. Now we've unleashed these cancers on the world and their reeking environmental havoc.

26. NAFTA: corporate politics at its most poisonous
Clinton has a lot to answer for - starting with depleting American jobs, rewarding capital flight, futhering exploitation of foreign workers and despoiling Mexico's environment. Out of office all these years without cororate palms to grease, yet he's still pushing this pathetic policy?

Michael Moore is right: Clinton was the best Republican president we've ever had.
