(Newsweek) The War Over Gipper
http://www.msnbc.com/news/987895.asp?0cv=KA01

CBS chairman Leslie Moonves, who approved both the script and a juicy eight-minute trailer, ordered the lawyers to look at the movie again, and asked for assurances that the facts were all in order. When he was told everything was fine, Moonves started editing anyway. “There are things we think go too far,” he told CNBC’s Tina Brown last week. (Moonves also declined to be interviewed by NEWSWEEK.) At that point, Ackerman removed himself from the editing in protest and the actors stopped talking. “Nobody seems to know what’s going on,” Ackerman told NEWSWEEK. “Whatever is going on is going on very secretly.”

Sad, really, that CBS is caving. According to the story, the events of the movie were vetted by at least two sources, although the dialogue wasn't. That would be pretty standard, I would imagine, with dramatizations.

All I expect is it to be fair. The right expects it to be a glowing tribute, and nothing less will satisfy them.

1. CBS may give the movie to Showtime?
Would they re-edit it to make it more like it's BUsh on 9/11 movie? You bet your bippy they would...

2. The Gipper was a dumb puppet deifying him is a joke
Many of the hideous problems we have today are due in part to policies created under this jackass today. He was a party figurehead for the republicans and this whole Raygun cult is just nauseating.

3. Every time I hear the name
Reagan or Bush I absolutely cringe!! My disdain for republicans is overshadowed only by my downright hatred of conservatives.

12. McCarthy's heirs
The reaction from the right isn't far short of totalitarian.

Throughout the Cold War, only the approved version of events could be tolerated; heterodox thought had to be expunged, its "perpetrators" hauled before committees, hounded, blacklisted.

The descendants of McCarthy can't stand having lost such punitive power (and in fact, are devoted to regaining it). For now, they patrol their patron saint like bloodhounds, requiring quasi-religious observance as the baseline for permissibility.

5. A suggestion
CSB--<http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/home/main100.shtml>--has a feedback link at the bottom of its main window. Send an email about this issue there. CBS is truly violating our right to freedom of expression. I thought this kind of blatant censorship happened only in truly repressive societies.

9. Done. Thanks for the Link
This is another milestone in the passing of the integrity of CBS, not to mention our freedoms.

7. Of Course the RNC has written NBC and demanded
The script of the Jessica Lynch story be forwarded to them for "historical accuracy" (Not shot, no rescue needed, etc) and family and soldiers-in-arms who were there to verify that what is portrayed actually occurred and is not just a ratings grab.
Yeah, I'll believe the RNC would do that just like they will shop around for a REAL presidential candidate for 2004 instead of Hitler Jr.

11. exactly my sentiments
I refuse to watch any TV programs or PAY to see any movies featuring: Arnold ('nuff said), Mel Gibson, Kelsey Grammer, Sly Stallone, Bruce Willis, and any other repugs.

New additions to the list include Arnold supporters: Rob Lowe (hear his new show is tanking, hee, hee), Will Smith ...

My favorite show, Law and Order, got kicked to the curb when the Fred Thompson (former repug senator from Tennessee) was cast to play the DA. I already hated NBC and only tuned in to watch Law & Order. Now they've f**ked that up too.

We should all put our money where our mouths are. Turn off cable, call sponsors, support the web and your candidate du jour.

10. I Blame Gipper for Iraq

Apparently the idol worship the right wing has for Reagan caused them to ignore a valuable lesson when we lost 250 Marines in Beirut because Reagan's White House had no realistic concept or purpose in the Middle East.

14. Flood the stations, DUers!
Call, write, e-mail the stations and make your views known!
It's unfortunate that the producers/scriptwriters/whomever made up bad crap about Raygun, when the truth about his real record would have been sufficient to show him for the addled puppet he was/is....

15. Does the Democratic party even exist anymore?
Why don't they jump in and ask why an organization that controls all branches of our government (RNC) is demanding to control the content of movies and TV?

The Democratic party are, for the most part, weak pathetic losers.
