US unveils new system for scanning foreign visitors
WASHINGTON - The US Department of Homeland Security has unveiled a high-tech registration system which it will use from next January to fingerprint and photograph millions of foreign visitors as they enter the country.

The new system, which is to be launched at 115 airports on Jan 5, uses scanning equipment to collect digital photographs and electronic fingerprints from foreign visitors as they are processed through immigration.

'For the first time, we'll have a comprehensive system that will be able to confirm the identity of a visitor to the United States in a biometric fashion,' said Mr Asa Hutchinson, Undersecretary for Border and Transportation Security.

'This gives us a tremendous new security capability.'
