Janet Reno brought a crowd of 300 people to their feet Wednesday, stormily applauding as she urged the Palm Beach Section of the National Council of Jewish Women never to give up hope of improving the lives, health and minds of children.
"A strong-willed woman in my life, my mother, taught me you can do anything in this life if it's the right thing. You don't give up. It is so important that we not give up, that we have faith in the future," the former U.S. attorney general said.
.......
"You have to begin early with prenatal care, and at age zero to 3 we make sure that the children of America have a roof over their head. We've got to teach children not to resolve their problems with knives and guns and fists. We've got to teach children the beauty of the spoken word and the written word.
"We've got to understand that teaching is one of the most important professions there is, bar none. We've got to be willing to pay whatever it takes. It's not just an FCAT world. It is a world of learning!
"We've got to develop an approach that will bring us universal health care in this country. We've got to stand up and break the back of lobbyists."
