Texas congressmen to get rid of 'dirty money' (from Cunningham)

Before federal investigators exposed the bribes he took from defense contractors, now-resigned Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham of California shared his political funds with eight Texas Republican congressmen.

With pressure mounting from Democrats, most vowed Thursday to donate the money to one good cause or another. Recipients included Rep. Tom DeLay, the former majority leader whose legal defense fund got $6,000 from Mr. Cunningham's American Prosperity political action committee.

"We want to stay as clean as we can," said DeLay fund trustee Brent Perry.

Texans got $20,000, mostly to campaign accounts, except for the money to Mr. DeLay's legal fund. The Sugar Land lawmaker is fighting state campaign-law and money laundering charges. Mr. Perry, the fund trustee, said he's researching House rules to determine if the money can be given to charity. If not, it will be returned to the Cunningham PAC, he said.
