The divinely ordained separation between Intelligence and Rev. Moore.

Gotta love the cool, 5-ton graven image of the Decalogue, though.

4. He wins in the long run, though, because this has nothing to do with...
his biblical, Christian principles.

What it DOES have to do with is the governor's race that is just around the corner in Alabama. Bob Riley just attempted to raise taxes on Alabamans, and they voted it down, overwhelmingly.

This whole 10 commandments ordeal has nothing to do with Moore's values, but with getting his name out across the state so that when he enters the governor's race, he will be as well known, if not better known, than Riley.

It is a concerted attempt to propel himself into the national limelight as some kind of christian hero to Alabama's overwhelmingly protestant religious population.

And he will win when he runs. The 10 Commandments deal is just something he created to cast himself as a prosecuted-yet-principled official.

All of the above comes from a friend with a dad in state government in Alabama.

10. IMHO Alabama will deserve all that it gets.
I don't feel a bit sorry for those living there. I am confident there are enough people who just refuse to vote that would make the difference. My advice is to move the hell away from stoneage haven.

Possibly you can enumerate all the things I've done to deserve Roy Moore? I'm not looking for pity. I'd just like to know why you think I deserve this.

14. Ditto Trof
Every state has ignorant public officials. I've done nothing to deserve him. Hell, I protest the idiot and the Chimp every chance I get. Not everyone in Alabama is stupid and uneducated.

FWIW, I don't think Roy Moore will get elected Governer.

27. Would he run aGainst Shelby?
I agree that he would have problems running for office. More and more Alabamians are getting tired of his grandstanding. As a point of interest, most of his support has been from outside the state. The church that funded him and is selling his videos is located in Florida, and most of the protesters were from out of state.

17. We live in a country of majority rule
If the majority is allowed to rule in such a manner as is apparent in Alabama then it deserves what it gets. You have an option of living where the majority is more "enlightened" to use a term I heard recently. If you chose to live in a backward place where there is no hope of enlightenment then you gets whats you pay for. I find myself in a similar situation in Alaska. It is only slightly less fundie than Alabama is. I feel exactly the same about myself. If I chose to live here then I get what I deserve.

28. Believe it or not,
there's more to life than politics. A lot more. There are many reasons why I moved back to Alabama 10 years ago, after over 20 years away.

A low cost of living is one. I have always wanted to live on a shoreline, and Alabama is one of the few places I could afford a home on the water. I think every morning that I get up and see the blue heron fishing in the needle grass, every time I see a family of bottlenose dolphins teaching their young to hunt mullet and shrimp in the shallows, every time I see an osprey pluck a redfish on the fly, every time I just look out my windows and see the bay, all this has added years to my life expectancy. It is a tonic.

The physical beauty of the state is breathtaking. Mountains, valleys, creeks, rivers, waterfalls, canyons, forests, caves, seashore, are all within a few minutes' or hours' drive.

I have close friends and family here. They are important to me and to my way of life. Hardly a day goes by that I don't spend a few enjoyable hours with one or more of them. We just like to gather and talk, and maybe have a drink, and tell stories, and cook, and eat, and "visit". It's a southern thang. You might say my social calendar is full. Life is good.

I'm retired and I've already lived most of my life. Now I enjoy giving back when I can. I'm on the library board and belong to the local watershed watch. I do chemical and biological testing in our bay twice a month. These things give me a lot of pleasure and satisfaction.

The political situation in Alabama is a small fly in the ointment. Yes I wish things were different. Could I affect the political bent of my state by moving to a place where people think more like I do? Of course not. Rather than leaving here and hunkering down with those who believe the way I do, I prefer to stay. Who knows, maybe I can change just a few minds by staying right where I am and talking to people and writing letters. As my great-aunt Lucia used to say "By the yard, it's hard. By the inch, it's a cinch."

Does the majority rule here? Or anywhere? Not by a long shot. Based on state turnout reports, about 20 to 25 per cent of the voters decide who gets elected. Now that's a number I can work with and try to change the way they think.

Do we "deserve" what we get? No, I don't think so. I'm not in league with the people who elect politicians here. Don't tell me I "deserve" it just because I live here. I'm doing my best to change it.

33. What you deserve doesn't have to be bad
Some people deserve to live next to the shore watching blue herons and dolphins. Some deserve less. I suspect you get what you deserve based on your writing and your life span. You know where you wish to live and in spite of the politics you will have happiness. There are others living there in Alabama that deserve something entirely different.

23. Man...that hurts
As a Birminghamian, there is a lot I don't like about my home state, yet there are a number of wonderful things.

This area is quite beautiful - rolling hills, beautiful forests, the foothills of the Smokey Mtns. Down in the southern portion we have the Gulf of Mexico. You've never seen a prettier beach!

The people are quite wonderful - for the most part, they are kind and generous and full of Southern hospitality. Sure, many have some deep set religious notions, but that is changing little by little.

The stereotypical Southern redneck can be found if you hunt long enough, but he is not as common as you would imagine. You see, over the past 40 years we have learned to live with one another, and it is quite hard to hate when you have a friend or a neighbor, or a co-worker who is different than you.

We do have politicians that play to the ignorance that comes with lack of education. Unfortunately we still have a number of people who are not well educated. For the most part, education can help one learn to critically analyze their world. Without this, it is hard to refute the religious arguments of Roy Moore.

The biggest thing that hurts from your statement is that there are a large number of liberals and progressives in our state. We live here because it is home, because this is where our jobs are, or because this is where our clients are. Almost half of us can't stand the Roy Moore-isms. We can't stand the rightward trend in the nation today, we can't stand that our fellow Alabamians vote for Republicans against their self-interest, and we can't stand that George Bush is in office today.

In the 2000 presidential race, 43% of my fellow Alabamians voted for either Al Gore or Ralph Nader. 56% voted for George Bush. In real numbers, that is a difference of 230,458 people. Not that many, really.

In 2002 (just a year ago!), a committed "Bush" republican won the Alabama Gubernatorial race with only 3,120 votes to spare. That's right - he almost lost. In fact, he did lose, but at 3:00 a.m. on election night, a judge in a very conservative county revised his county's vote totals that then put Riley over the top. The Republican Attorney General threatened to arrest anyone who tried to secure the actual ballots for counting. Siegelman won. Everyone knows it, but there was nothing that could be done.

In 2000, 45% of the voters voted for Sandra Yates for Supreme Court Chief Justice. Sandra is and was a very strong progressive. Guess who won with 55% of the vote? Yep...Roy Moore. In real numbers, 729,520 Alabamians voted against Roy Moore. It was very clear then what he was about, and almost 3/4 of a million Alabamians said, "hell no!"

So, I hope you re-think your position regarding Alabamians deserving what they get. You see, in our state, the majority rules (except in the Siegelman/Riley vote) - even if that majority is not much bigger than the minority. So I would hate to think that 45% of us "deserves" Roy Moore. We are fighting our assess off to get Democrats back into office. We are fighting our assess off to get Roy Moore out of office. We are fighting the good fight here at home so our state that is full of good will not be totally taken over by the fringe right wing lunatics.

We could use your support.

15. I’m cautiously optimistic…..
That this might be a good indicator as to how the “Pledge” case might play out. With Scalia out of picture, worst case I see is a 4-4 draw and the case is sent back to the full 9th where I feel the decision of the 3 judge panel will be upheld. But after the failure of the three shitheads today, my optimism is up to at least a 5-3 and maybe even a 6-2 decision to ixnay the offending word.

21. Thanks…wasn’t positive on the tie issue…
Kept thinking it would cause it to be thrown back….Still…would like to see a Majority decision, not that it would lessen the outrage from those committed to the pledge as is, it’s just that a tie has less of a kick to it than a majority decision.

Moore can post the 10C everywhere. Skywrite 'em if he wants. Pass any law based on his religious dogma that he wants. Bottom line?

I won't do what he tells me.

32. Freeper says SCOTUS should stay out of State matters!

o: Brian S

The SCOTUS refusing to hear this case rests squarely on Roy Moore's shoulders. Moore's attorneys appealed the wrong thing. They should not have appealed the ruling itself but rather should have appealed whether or not the Federal Judge even had juridiction in the case.

The SCOTUS made the right call, they have no business deciding a state issue -- had they heard this appeal they would have been setting precedence that would have furthur broadened things that "Speration" could cover. The appeal should be that the Fed Judge should have never heard the case in the first place.
