Iraqi Villagers Celebrate U.S. Helicopter Hit (Shooting at their cows)

Iraqis said U.S. troops, who often come under attack from roadside bombs or rocket-propelled grenades in the nearby town of Falluja, had swept through the village hunting guerrillas.

People who failed to provide information on fighters were arrested after U.S. troops conducted aggressive searches, several villagers said.

"I know of several people who were arrested, including the local cleric and his family," farmer Kareem Mansour said.

"They put sacks over people's heads and took them away."

HOSTILE CHILDREN

U.S. officials have repeatedly blamed fighters loyal to Saddam and Muslim militants who cross the border from neighboring countries for attacks that have killed at least 136 American troops since President Bush (news - web sites) declared major combat over on May 1.

A few Baisa residents said they knew of a Syrian man who trained guerrillas. Others said Saddam's supporters were behind the violence.

They said U.S. troops made even more enemies on Sunday night.

"They just shoot at anything. They heard a noise and then they shot at one of our cows. When we stood on the roof and shone a light, they shot the lamp," said Hussein Issawi, a customs official.

14. Of course
the invasion was never to free the people. it was to steal the oil and provide serfs to work the fields for us and israel.

2. but comparisons to Vietnam....
....are totally invalid. No similarities there, no sir.
nothing like the experience in Vietnamese villages at all.
we all remember how the ordinary peasants loved us and were willing to help us every step of the way....

3. I was watching CNN
early in the am when the story broke. News crews on the site were overwhelmed by locals celebrating. I could hardly belive my eyes. I did not watch any more of the coverage throughout the day so I do not know if they continued to show the footage of the people chanting. It was a powerful juxtaposition to latest spin on the Iraqi support for their liberation.
Did anyone else see this coverage?

4. This has been going on from the begining.
Everytime there's an american killed there's a large crowd cheering. Usually they'll show it right after an incident has happened and before the censors can get to it.

5. So many Saddam loyalists....
Edited on Mon Nov-03-03 12:57 PM by yellowcanine
Funny how there are so many "Saddam loyalists", given the fact that Saddam was such a tyrant. Do any of the Bushistas not see the contradiction here? Either Saddam was not a tyrant, or these people (the villagers) aren't Saddam loyalists - can't have both, Rummy-dummy.

10. Loyalist
There were many people that were paid well by Saddam. While the rest of the Iraqi's suffered, these people lived a good life as long as they were willing to do Saddam's bidding. They are the Sunni's and were the ones responsible for most of the killings. The area that the helicopter went down is know as the Sunni triangle,of course these people will celebrate the killing of Americans.Their world was turned upside down when Saddam lost power. Now those people that they tortured and jailed have the freedom to make a life for themselves, while those that murdered and tortured are left with nothing but memories of the good ol' days with Saddam.Ahe'ee Nehemah

11. Oh. Ok. Thanks for clearing that up
So basically you are saying you know they are Saddam's loyalists because of where they live and the fact that they were cheering the downing of the helicopter. Yeah, that's logical. Wouldn't have anything to do with U.S. soldiers kicking down doors and people getting shot at checkpoints. No, of course not.

12. Does it bother you that the U.S. (on a per day) average is killing
more Iraqi citizens than Saddam ever dreamed of killing?

It's a case of the cure being worse than the disease.

16. Let's see if I got this right
I am trying to understand the neo-con view of the Islamic world.

Sunni - bad bad
Wahabi - bad worse
Taliban - bad worst
Shi'a - good?

Or more likely because we put tyrants over them and then destroy thier country to steal their oil.

17. Wolfowitz remarks
Seeing the joy in the faces of people who have been freed from Saddam's republic of fear underscores the courage and wisdom of President Bush and Prime Minister Blair in acting to free those people from the ghastly prison in which they have lived for 35 years, and it means that we will be safer eventually in this country too.
