Legendary figure
dies at 76
Family caught off guard by
A. James Manchin's heart attack

Deanna Wrenn
Daily Mail Capitol reporter

Monday November 03, 2003; 12:00 PM

A. James Manchin, one of the state’s most colorful characters for more than two generations, died today of a massive heart attack. He was 76.

The powerful orator and longtime Democratic politician had been in relatively good health, said his niece, Gayle Manchin.

“This has taken the family completely by shock,” she said. “This just caught everyone totally off guard.”

2. I have my own AJames story
which would get me sued for slander so it's best not made public

the way I see it--one less vote for Joe for governor

5. No doubt
I've heard some rather interesting tales about ol' AJ that aren't in line with the image of a scion of family values.

3. He was an embarrassment
Reminded me of Mr. Haney on Green Acres. The family pretty much owned Farmington when I lived down in that area. Everything from the health clinic to the convenience store had the Manchin name attached to it.

6. Where were you?
I grew up in one of the Fairmont "suburbs" and passed through Farmington every day going to high school. What didn't have the Manchin name on it had the name of Manchin kin on it.

i think of him more as the Boss J D Hogg of west virginia politics

and his corporate asshole son, for screwing wv democrats and getting cecil underwood elected over charlotte pritt, is the zell miller of our state--unfortunately, he's the front-runner for the 04 nomination for governor

4. "colorful" = "asshole-ish"
Ever notice how the media attaches the word "colorful" to people who were, well, assholes during their lives.

Strom Thurmond was another "colorful" character, right?
