Kerry says U.S. needs terror war allies

NEW YORK, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., said the United States must convince other countries the war on terror is to protect our common security.

In prepared remarks to the Council on Foreign Relations in New York Thursday, Kerry said the war on terror has "drawn us smack in the middle of an internal struggle in the Islamic world," and that region must be helped to change politically, economically and ideologically.

"One, he said, "make sure the right side wins the war of ideas within the Islamic world; two, build up diversified economies and civil society; and, three, end the empire of oil. These three challenges make it abundantly clear this is not a war the United States should fight alone."

Kerry said that "at home, in the Middle East and around the world" U.S. officials must convince people the war on terror is a "common fight against a threat to our collective security, not just America's fight against terrorists."

1. He's been saying that since he started running for Preznit
and I do believe he's right. We need this to be a collective effort if we must have a "war on terror", not a US crusade.

4. Problem is that the world would trust Kerry and work with him, but Bush
is another story - he has all the sincerity of a mambo snake.

2. The world knew it Sept 12, 2001. Then Bush spent the last 4yrs convincing
them otherwise, now the US is considered the bad guy.

With a President Gore or Kerry, the goodwill and cooperation of the world would NEVER have been squandered.

5. Common Sense strikes again.
"this is not a war the United States should fight alone."

Too bad * and his PNAC buddies have alienated so many of our allies and organizations like NATO and the UN.

I'd like Kerry to give a response/rebuttal to every speech * gives. It should be like shooting fish in a barrel.

6. I think the US is perfectly capable of inflicting terror on it's own.

7. The harm that Bush has done to our country is irreparable!
Even capable experienced people like Wes Clark or John Kerry will be hard-pressed to turn the tide.

8. Won't happen as long as we are in Iraq, our entire countries word is shit!
...and the rest of the world knows this.

Apparently Mr Kerry still thinks we are looked up to when in fact we are despised... and damn me if he thinks England, Israel and Poland can save us.

Kerry here is the deal... when we start removing significant and meaningful amounts of troops and send this war criminal administration and all those in the halls of power who supported the worst monstrosity our nation has ever inflicted upon another to trial, then we can start talking about rebuilding our relationship with our "allies", until then this kind of talk is spinning a wheel to nowhere.

10. We were in Europe (Spain, UK) last summer
They really do differentiate between Bush and the US. I was amazed how many people like waiters asked why Bush won - and were noticabley friendlier when my husband or I said we voted for Kerry.

If Bush did reach out to the world, for the sake of the future other countries would respond - though not with much trust.

16. Agreed, my sister is over in Europe now and my son
earlier this year. They love Americans and hate our president and his evil minions. In fact, they kind of pity us right now. (ick)

9. nobody's buying right now
They view the "war on terror" as just the US trying to conquer the middle east.

11. Why use the rhetoric of the right wing, Kerry?
The "war on terror" metaphor was pretty stupid right from the start. You can't make war on an abstract noun. You can, however, hide all kinds of barbarism behind that rhetorical front--such as the Iraq war which Kerry stupidly supports.

We desperately need to move away from war, both figuratively and literally, and Bush-lite platitudes aren't going to do it.

Aw, isn't that sweet.

12. Thank you!
"You can't make war on an abstract noun. "

Is Kerry just Bush lite, as Hillary is? It would seem so.

13. Kerry certainly has lost the fire of his youth. His comfy digs right
now suit him just fine, if he can keep them.

14. He said that during the election and he was correct then and he is
correct now. Every country has got to see this is for their benefit also.

Bush is a piss poor salesman on this. He doesn't know how to present this to other world leaders who could be of major support to us. Instead, Bush has to play the tough cowboy/sheriff and take the terrorists on all by himself with his side-kick deputy Blair.
