Iraq war veteran to challenge GOP congresswoman in Kentucky
An Iraq war veteran unhappy with President Bush's handling of the conflict said Wednesday that he plans to challenge U.S. Rep. Anne Northup, a close Bush ally.

.......

"It became a realization that we are less safe than we were, not more safe," said Horne, a longtime political independent who recently joined the Democratic Party.

.......

Northup has been a staunch supporter of Bush's Iraq policy. Horne said she has "become nothing but a rubber stamp" for her fellow Republican. Horne said members of Congress "take an oath to the country, not to the president."

Northup, a prolific fundraiser in her fifth term in the Louisville-area district, "seems to be more interested in supporting the agendas of people who gave her money," Horne said.

4. Karl Rove is probably getting a smear campaign underway....
Good luck to this veteran. I used to have Max Cleland as a senator. Loosing 3 limbs in Nam wasn't patriotic enough. :(

8. The veterans serve our country yet again.
It's always good to have those who have been in war lend their voices to the debate since they know the horrors that these chickenhawks don't.

9. I think as more vets come back, a lot of shit will hit the fan.
Based on conversations with a family member who is currently on his third tour in Iraq, I've learned the following. People in the military are forbidden by military law to speak out against civilian leadership of the military. He also told me that based on what many soldiers are saying, there is going to be a large group of personnel leaving the military asap. I believe this adds up to some big PR problems for the Bush cabal. America loves it's troops, and when the vets speak, people listen.

10. I'm not optimistic.
I think the magnetic ribbon is about as much "support" as the warmongers are willing to give the troops.

11. Here's a map of KY-3
It comprises pretty much all of Metro Louisville (Jefferson Co.).

Here's one of the entire state. Notice how little gerrymandering there is. It shocked the hell out of me. Apparently KY is pretty solid red, although I can't imagine Metro Louisville being like the rest of the state. There are the predictably red suburbs in the East End, and there is the blue-collar West End, and the mostly black South End. Outside the I-265 ring (just imagine it continuing west to US 60), it's mostly Jeff Foxworthy types, but population density falls off quite a bit.

15. There's no need to gerrymander
when the elections are solidly fixed at the local level.

17. Excellent!!
I live in the heart of that district and am thrilled to see him running....although I sure want to find out more about him.

For those who don't live here, it should be a democratic district. Mazzoli, a Dem, represented the district for years and years. The Dems just couldn't find anyone to knock off Northup after she got a foothold in the district and started bringing home the bacon. Plus, to the average voter she seems fairly likeable and isn't nearly as "extreme" in ideology as many on the right.

If he is a solid candidate Anne will have a huge fight on her hands.

18. Air America Radio has a section called Fighting Dems. . .

Looks like they'll have another one to add to their list. They feature a different candidate every Tuesday night on The Majority Report.

If you are from Kentucky, go to your local CFK meeting to see if you can help. See my Change For Kentucky link below.
