Explosives Stolen from U.S. Lab
Federal Investigators Probe High-Tech Explosives Theft
About 400 Pounds of Explosive Material Missing

Dec. 19, 2005 — About 400 pounds of explosive material was stolen from a research facility in New Mexico, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives confirmed today.

The theft was discovered Sunday night by local authorities.

ATF agents are investigating the large theft from Cherry Enginering, a company owned by Chris Cherry, for decades the senior explosives scientist at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico.

Also, 2,500 detonators were missing from a storage explosive container, or magazine, in the name of Cherry Engineering.

The theft is one of the largest reported cases from a facility in the United States in the last decade ending 2004. During that time, a total of about 1,000 pounds was reported stolen from government facilities in 14 reported incidents. It is unknown whether there is any connection to terrorism.

Why would Syria/Iran/NK support terrorists...

if they can find all they need within the very country they choose to attack?

1. What? The wiretaps didn't stop that? WTF?
Hey, I though we were safe and all with NSA poring over all the conversations and stuff.

I guess we got ourselves a little insurgency right here, eh?

6. they've got no time to put up cameras at explosive storage facilities...
that would be TOO EXPENSIVE and troublesome, so they'll just clamp down on freedom and liberty instead and spy on their political opposition.

2. 600 lbs, of plutonium came up missing from Los Alamos

7. Link? The only reasonable way you can lose 600 pounds of plutonium
is via a clerical error. Trying to steal that much plutonium, keep it, and move it, would probably result in some extremely dead thieves. It's not like stealing gold, or even explosives.

Very safe to handle in its storage container.

17. You're right, but I was thinking about the neutron contamination.
Neuton radiation can result in secondary neutron activation, causing the environment around them to become "hot." Unless they're lining their storage containers with hafnium, that could become a problem in improvised storage.

21. One would assume that any thieves would already know the rules.
Storage, at least, is not that hard.

Nor, really, is smuggling it out of the country. We don't inspect every sailboat that leaves our shores... Or ANY of them.

18. Big difference
An activist group saying 600 pounds is unaccounted for is a lot different from 600 pounds suddenly and officially going missing.

What?

22. Funny you should say that...
I had a "flash" about that very thing today-
It came out of the blue like an intuitive premonition.
Nothing and I mean NOTHING would surprise me
these days.
I think we should all prepare for the unpreparable
for the rest of out lives at this point.

25. I had an odd dream
about a month ago. Your "flash" made me recall it

. . . the dream started as a field of black, as if I was looking into a very dark night. And then there was a sudden, blinding flash with a circular form. As I awoke, I had a dreadful feeling that I had witnessed a nuclear detonation.

Just an angst dream . . . I hope.

Cheers
