GM plans expansion to launch Cadillacs in China
ELAINE KURTENBACH
Associated Press

SHANGHAI, China - Red Flag limos, move over. Cadillacs are on the way.

General Motors Corp. said Tuesday it plans to boost its manufacturing capacity in Shanghai by 50 percent to build Cadillacs, expanding its push into the luxury end of the world's fastest growing auto market.

GM, which already markets Buicks and Chevrolets here, said it would sell both imported and domestically assembled Cadillacs. To meet rising demand, it plans to expand production capacity at its factories in Shanghai and in southern China.

Building Cadillacs inside China would allow customers to avoid paying high import duties. (snip/...)

1. Maybe it's part of a strategy to murder Chinese leaders?
ABC News Story

WASHINGTON Nov. 3 — The government is investigating Cadillac and Oldsmobile vehicles after consumers reported six fires due to fuel leaks, the National Highway Safety Administration said Monday.
NHTSA is investigating Cadillac DeVilles, Eldorados and Sevilles and Oldsmobile Auroras after getting 69 complaints from consumers in the last two years. No injuries have been reported. Around 400,000 vehicles from model years 1995-97 could be affected.

NHTSA said many of the complaints describe fuel spraying from small holes in plastic sections of the fuel rail, which is a pipe that supplies fuel to the injectors. Cadillac and Oldsmobile vehicles have the same fuel rail.

2. Just what the world needs
Just imagine additional tens of millions of cars all needing oil and emitting CO2.

4. Well, since nobody's buying GM cars here, may as well go to China!
There was an article in Saturday's paper in the automotive section.

It talked about how GM was losing money on cars, barely making money on trucks and losing overall market share to the Japanese manufacturers. In spite of all that, they had a decent third quarter profit.

The reason? They made a lot of money in real estate, since so many people retooled their mortgages through GM's financial services branch.
