Republican Announces for Gephardt's Seat
ST. LOUIS -- Former state Rep. Zane Yates said Tuesday he will run for Rep. Dick Gephardt's congressional seat, looking to become the first Republican to hold the 3rd District post in more than a half century.

Five Democrats have announced their candidacy: state Rep. Joan Barry, state Sen. Steve Stoll, St. Louis Circuit Clerk Mariano Favazza, Washington University associate dean for student services Mark Smith, and state Rep. Russ Carnahan, son of the late Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan and former Sen. Jean Carnahan.

1. I try to stay informed
and consider myself pretty well informed. But I had no idea Gephardt wasn't going to seek reelection. When did he announces this?

2. Quite some time ago and I actually wish he would
run against Kit Bond for Senator - Bond's up this next time and he could be beaten but hasn't drawn any serious candidate so far and Gephardt might be the only person who could beat him. We desperately need a Democratic Senator.

9. I think you can but whether you can or not in
Missouri - if Gephardt doesn't get the Democratic nomination, I think there would still be time for him to get in - don't know if there is a deadline or not.

all depends on the laws in the state. Lieberman did. And John Edwards could have run for both if he wanted to.
