Carlos Santana Calls On Bush To Change His Evil Ways

by Richard S. Ehrlich
BANGKOK, Thailand -- After denouncing the U.S.-led war in Iraq, rock legend Carlos Santana told more than 10,000 cheering fans at a sensational concert on Monday (Nov. 3) that President George W. Bush must change his "evil ways".

"He is supposed to be America's president, but he's not my president, I didn't vote for him," Mr. Santana said at a news conference on Sunday (Nov. 2) shortly after arriving in the Thai capital during his brief "Shaman Tour 2003" in Asia.

When asked for his opinion about the U.S.-led war in Iraq, Mr. Santana replied: "The only thing I know is all wars are wrong.

"There is no such thing as 'holy war' because this is a contradiction. I believe that if we declare war against anything, it should be war against poverty and ignorance," the moustached musician said.

29. Does it matter?
The Gropenator was born in Austria and he was allowed to run. Does the president have to be born in the US?

Obviously it doesn't matter if he has a soul, so why would the birthplace make a difference?

37. it DOES matter
The Constitution requires presidents be U.S. born. States get to choose the requirements for their governors.

I saw the "Santana Blues Band" opening for Led Zeppelin and Albert King all for 3 bucks! That, ofcourse, was before Woodstock put them on the radar screen of the world. Am I old or what?

21. Must have been at the old Fillmore at Geary and Fillmore upstairs where
Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, BB King, Ike and Tina Turner, Buddy Guy, Big Momma Thornton, Country Joe and the Fish, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and every other incredible 60s musicians played. Could have been the Avalon Ballroom too, if it was in SF. Still have some of those small 5x7 posters announcing who was gonna be there--loved those years!!

28. First saw him in 1969 at the Texas International Pop Festival
It was the last of three outdoors concerts produced by the same people over the summer of 1969 that took place over holiday weekends. The first was in Atlanta over Memorial Day weekend, the second was Woodstock over Fourth of July weekend and the Texas event, occuring over the Labor Day weekend. This one took place in Lewisville,Texas, about fifteen miles north of Dallas, which at the time consisted of a water tower, convience store, boat store, and bait and tackle shop.Present population:about 100,000.

My brother lives in Bangkok. I'm fixing to email him and see if he was there. As large a city as Bangkok is,acts of the Carlos Santana class are fairly rare.

38. 'way back in 68...
I saw... lemme see... Santana, Creedence Clearwater, It's a Beautiful Day, and... well, I forget who the HEADLINER act was that they were the warmup for!

San Francisco, although I forget the venue and the cost--I was way too stoned to retain that information. Not much, though, that's for sure.

I think I was about 18 then. Quite the evening.

44. Yeah you are old, but I am envious
I was born in '81. That means that my youthful memories of popular music include the likes of New Kids on the Block and Brittany Spears. What I wouldn't give to have seen the likes of Santana, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, John Lennon, etc. back in your day.

5. Cool!
Always did like Santana's music, now I like him too. And Saturday night, Terrance Simien(a Cajun artist) was here in town and while not coming right out and denouncing bush, did perform "War, what is it good for? Absolutely Nothin" " and "Give Peace a Chance" He did these two songs immediately after performing the National Anthem. Never seen a Cajun artist do that before.

16. It's a shame he feels the need to apologize
and explain himself for being an American. This dip Dumbya (and a good portion of the electorate) has made it so that Americans with a conscience have to explain where they stand vis-a-vis the criminal gang in the WH.

23. "should be a war against poverty and ignorance" Santana's heart is always
in the right place.

When the musicians start calling for an end and writing songs like the 60s we know we're headed in the right direction.

Not long ago I read an editorial John Mellencamp and his wife Elaine wrote saying basically the same thing that Santana is saying. War is wrong and we don't belong there.

Viva Carlos!!

40. ARMED FORCES RADIO IS CENSORED
Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 11:49 AM by saigon68
It drove them up the wall when Frieda Payne came out with
Bring the Boys Home for the Black troops.

It was censored, and not played on AFVN, but people got cassette tapes and played them at high volumne.

" Bring the boys home, turn the ships around, lay your weapons down, they are marching cross the skies, all the soldiers who have died, trying to get home."

Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 01:57 AM by kidrocks
I always remember, and more importantly, I'll never forget a young Carlos Santana at the 1977 California Jam/2 at the Ontario Motor Speedway in Southern California. What a great rock and roll expierience that was. Hail Carlos Santana.

Anyone remember The California Jams? I also attended the US Festivals. GOD, those were the good old days! Long live rock and roll! Thank you Jesus!

Any celebrity involvement is a good thing because there are a lot of youngsters out there desperately in need of a good deprogramming. Kill your television, it's now more evil than ever.

Everybody tells me, we love your songs
Your soul is precious, but it just ain't good enough
You need a single to help you through
Program directors, they all make the rules
I said, you're kidding, you're putting me on
What about the constitution, freedom of expression
Listen to the music, just feel the sound
Love is the motion, that makes the world go around

Sing, songs of freedom
Bring joy to the world
Sing, songs of freedom
Bring joy to the world

Everybody listen, stop and take some time
To understand the world situation
There is no meaning in fighting the way we do
Let's come together and forgive each other

Sing, songs of freedom
Bring joy to the world
Sing, songs of freedom
Bring joy to the world

Songs Of Freedom - Santana
