Hillary Clinton says GOP deficit bill will increase abortions

By DEVLIN BARRETT
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton waded back into the highly charged abortion debate Tuesday, charging that a GOP cost-cutting measure will boost the number of abortions in the United States.

Clinton, D-N.Y., said a piece of a pending deficit-reduction measure would indirectly raise the number of abortions in the United States by leaving poor women with less Medicaid coverage for contraception.

"I sadly predict that if this measure stays in the bill ... the number of abortions will go up, the human and financial costs will go up, and many women will be really out of luck," Clinton said in a Senate floor debate on the bill, which is headed for a close vote later Tuesday or early Wednesday.

The former first lady spoke out against language in the bill that would allow states to choose whether to offer family planning services under Medicaid, a government-funded health care program for the poor.

"We obviously have very strong opinions and deeply held convictions about abortion, but are we also divided about contraception and family planning? Are we not in this body committed to reducing the number of abortions? Apparently we're not," Clinton said.

16. I'll be the second.
If she runs against Jeb Bush in '08, how's anyone to tell them apart? ;-)

1. I'm with her on that one.......
Apparently, having women decide for themselves whether to have children and how many of them to have is particularly galling to this bunch.

3. As a Hillary critic, I have to hand her one on this one.
She gets two positive points toward working herself out of my million point deficit Zephyr scoring card.

This will put the religious right in the hypocritical box they deserve to be in.

4. err Hillary
I know you are the former first lady but do you think there are more pressing issues at hand at this very moment?

Your (our) president has admitted to spying upon Americans. You are an Anmerican and you have said nothing about this activity of this president who admitted he broke the law.

Hillary, you are playing a game with us by focusing upon this issue right now. I for one am not impressed.

You have failed to address the most important issues and I ask why not. Why are you not right out there with Boxer and Feingold, defending this nation against the lawbreaking tyranny we see being exposed?

Forget it Hillary. You are old.

7. No, there is no more pressing issue than citizens (women) having
rights. There is absolutely no more pressing issue.

Budget "cutting" that reduces money for birth-control and reduces money for Child Support collection is removing women's rights.

There is absolutely no more important issue than ensuring that ALL citizens rights are protected. I am not willing to sacrifice womens' rights and womens'well-being for some allegedly "higher" good.

13. You're grossly wrong.
"Nothing" more pressing than contraception? You want to think about that for a few minutes? War, famine, genocide, screw all that. What's *really* important is making sure that everyone focuses all the time on what you consider important, right?

15. No, there is nothing more pressing
There are things equally pressing, yes. The rights of our citizens, their quality of life, are the most pressing thing that Congress needs to focus on. This includes what Hillary stated, it includes illegal spying on *'s orders, it includes heating costs that are at a profiteering level. It includes many, many things. The reproductive rights of women and the effect on their families is indeed the most pressing, when you are that person. It's all part of the same thing.

10. In your zeal to criticize Hillary, you might read the article...
Before you comment.

Hillary made those statements during floor debate on the bill in question...

"I sadly predict that if this measure stays in the bill ... the number of abortions will go up, the human and financial costs will go up, and many women will be really out of luck," Clinton said in a Senate floor debate on the bill, which is headed for a close vote later Tuesday or early Wednesday. 6. Gotta love it when the Bible-thumpers get PWN3D by Hillary!
Her comments should raise Pat Robertson's blood pressure noticeably, perhaps hastening his date with that guy with the horns and the pointy tail...

8. Don't have a problem with what Hillary said
What's wrong with thinking/suggesting that abortion is wrong, even if you support the legal right to make that choice?

I would say the majority of Americans, and I would argue the majority of Democrats actually hold that view.

Hillary is not my choice, but on this issue, I find it refreshing to hear a Democrat actually suggest that abortion raises a moral issue.

When we Democrats say "you can't leglislate morality" we are not saying that there is no longer a place for moral choices. In fact, the fact that DU members care so much about moral issues is what makes DU so strong.

Well, for many people abortion is one such issue, and I don't favor telling Hillary to "shut up" when she suggests that abortion is a moral issue and a failure of sorts.

9. as a pro-lifer said to me with a bullhorn on 1/20/05 in DC....
"killin babies is bad"

He had (accidentally I believe) turned directly toward me and said this with a bullhorn from about 3 feet away. I got so upset due to his lack of respect for my hearing, but I held my cool and asked my question in a calm and reasonable manner.

"So you are against abortions, I can understand your argument, but do you at least support the use of contraception?"

sadly his reply was:

"No absolutely not, kiling or preventing babies is a sin and a crime against humanity."

Yup, exact words. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

11. There are times I disagree with Hillary, but this, this I love.
Besides being true, it's also beating the Republicans to death with their own shoes. And it's typical Republican penny-pinching: cut money for contraception, then pay more when the women need abortions on Medicaid, or else pay it out later in welfare to a poor single mother.

14. This does nothing- the pro-fetus camp will simply reply to their rabid
followers that abortions are the work of slutty women who don't deserve medical care anyway.

17. She's right on this one
I criticize her on things that I think deserve criticism. I agree with her on a lot of domestic issues and I think they're very, very pressing, too. I think she perfectly well understands where this country has gone since Bush took office and hates it as much as anyone. Calling them on their bullshit is a good thing.
