Bolton threatens U.S. funding for U.N.

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, said the United States should withhold U.N.-member dues if reform isn`t made to his liking.

The U.S. dues make up 22 percent of the U.N. budget.

Bolton is pushing for a number of changes in the world body including giving more power to the secretary general, which developing nations see as a power grab, the Boston Globe reports.

Bolton, a longtime critic of the United Nations, said he`d agree to a three-month interim budget to work out the U.S. demands.

10. The only thing that will change is the expectation of receiving the funds.

The U.N. hasn't received its share of funds from the U.S. since * took office (to show his "displeasure" with its various policies from birth control to AIDS to Iraq). So that's five years without money.

If Bolton goes through with his threat, the only difference is that the U.N. doesn't budget for late payment of the funds that they really aren't going to get anyway.
