Appeals Court Won't Speed Up DeLay Appeal 17 minutes ago

AUSTIN, Texas - A Texas appeals court Thursday thwarted former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's bid for a speedy trial.

The money laundering and conspiracy case against the Republican congressman has been on hold while prosecutors appeal a judge's dismissal of some of the charges.

DeLay's attorneys asked the 3rd Court of Appeals to speed up the appeals process by shortening the filing periods from 20 days to five days. But the court said no.

DeLay has been pressing for a quick resolution to his case so he can regain his post as majority leader before his colleagues call for new leadership elections next month.

5. LOLOLOL - If he keeps screwing with this case
It will not only interfere with his majority leader job but it will be hanging over his head as the primary elections approach. If he is tried convicted and pardoned by Bush before the election is he still eligible to serve assuming he wins? Otherwise I believe we have seen the last of this POS.

25. Oh, Bush can pardon DeLay anytime
After all, Ford pardoned Nixon for everything, known and unknown, back in 1974. Bush could do the same for his good friend Tom DeLay. But that's not how the Bush crime cabal works; the capo doesn't take a hit for his minions when they step on their dicks. Stumble or stagger, and you're on your own. But everyone else has to expend their best efforts to prop up Bush, even when he's so clearly delusional and out of touch with reality as he's been the last (at least) four years.

11. I knew the court wouldn't see it Tommy's way
As bad or corrupt as Texas politics are (and I believe every word every DUer has ever written about the subject), state court appellate judges aren't in the habit of kowtowing to petitioners before them. Their timetables and their counsel are their own, and they don't cotton to interference from punks in trouble, like DeLay.

Wanting a speedy trial so he can reclaim his former position in the House. What makes the s.o.b. think he'll be acquitted?

23. well this is a big WOO HOO
this is my Christmas present since Fitz didn't make the deadline. Maybe Fitz will give me a wonderful New Year's present. But knowing the bugman won't be back as leader in the house and will be so busy with his own troubles will become ineffective. Blunt is next.

24. Remember, everyone, judges are bad!
Right here on this forum, I see some posts in which people are complaining about judges.

I think a lot of people can point to some judgment they've encountered which they really, really, didn't like. Perhaps it was a judgment in their divorce case, or their custody case.

But overall, judges and the judicial system are a good thing BECAUSE THE REPUBLICANS HAVE NOT YET SEIZED TOTAL CONTROL OF THEM.

My opinion: we shouldn't join in carping about "stupid judges" because when we do, we're joining in one of the repukes' phony "causes". They have for years been spreading this lie that the court system needs to be shut down or re-made or whatever. What they really want is to fix the entire court system so that the judges will rule only in favor of the rich and the powerful.

So IMO it's fine to critique individual judges, but we should not condemn the entire judicial system, because that is playing into the repukes' hands.

I know this post is off-topic to some extent, but just look at what this particular appeals court has done. And I don't think the appeals court did it simply because they "don't like" Bugman. It is a perfectly fair decision. We should be glad there is still a small part of the legal system that does not belong entirely to the repukes and their corporate masters. And this decision is proof of that.
