San Francisco OKs Most-Ambitious Minimum-Wage Law
POSTED: 8:08 a.m. EST November 5, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco is one of the most expensive places to live -- and voters there are trying to make it a little more affordable.

They've approved a ballot measure boosting the minimum wage to $8.50 an hour. That's more than $3 above the federal minimum wage and will apply to virtually every employer in San Francisco.

2. It's a good start
but seriously, a full time job in the bay area at 8.50 an hour, you'd still have to live out of your car.

4. Hell, I make 9.50/h at one job and 8.00 at my other job, and I can barely
afford groceries here in Tennessee, one of the cheapest states to live in! I can't imagine what it'd be like to live in San Fran if you're not a lawyer, doctor, or dot-com millionaire (are there any left?)

5. $8.50 per hour isn't jack shit in any California city
That's still less than the maximum unemployment insurance benefit in California, and nowhere near enough to support a family.

6. I am getting $370 per week unemployment that's $9.25 for 40 hrs
When you take out taxes, and transportation costs you aren't making jack shit on $8.50 and hr and those jobs have no benefits.

We are headed for the third world kind of country of the wealthy power class and the poor working class and nothing in between.

People better wake the hell up and work together.

Only economic issues can pull us together. All other issues pale by comparison. So a gay couple can marry but if they can feed themselves so what?
