Bush To Give Major Speech Thurs On Spreading Democracy
Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 02:41 PM by peterh
*DJ Bush To Say Democracy Needed In Parts Of Mid-East, Asia

(sorry – no link yet)

hmmmm….what does the little critter have up his sleeve this time?

on edit: still no link, but here's the text...

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--President George W. Bush will give a major policy
speech Thursday in which he will say that more democracy and freedom are needed
in both the Middle East and in parts of Asia.
During his speech, the president will cite specific countries that need to
move toward greater freedom, including Burma, North Korea and China. He will
also point to some countries in the Middle East that have taken tentative steps
toward greater freedom and democracy, such as Bahrain, Jordan and Saudi Arabia,
Bush's National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday.
However, while the president will mention the need for more freedom in Asia,
Rice said the focus will be on the Middle East.
"He will focus on the fact the region that has been most deprived of freedom
is the Middle East and most of the speech is about the new opportunities for a
forward strategy for freedom in the Middle East," Rice said.
Rice said the speech will mark a break with six decades of U.S. policy toward
the Middle East, which previously focused on maintaining stability in the
region. Rice said this strategy appears to have failed.
"What we found is that we did not buy security and stability but rather
frustration and pent-up emotions and a region that has fallen behind in terms of
prosperity, and, in fact, continues to produce ideologies of hatred," she added.
Rice said the speech will build on an address the president gave last spring
in which he said one of the central goals of the war in Iraq would be
establishing democracy in Iraq. The speech Thursday will broaden the theme and
say more freedom and democracy is needed throughout the Middle East.

1. He's speaking from a parallel universe, no?
I dare anybody with a press pass to ask Bush what his notion of democracy is. He couldn't even break it down along Latin lines.

47. Democracy means free trade...
...freedom for the American corporation, not the individual.

Actually, freedom for the American multi-national corp. to rape, pillage, and control the natural resources of the nations in question (examples: Bolivia or Iraq).

President George W Bush has deplored the "freedom deficit" in the Middle East and said the United States must remain focused on the region "for decades".

"Our commitment to democracy is being tested in the Middle East," he said in a televised Washington speech in defence of US democracy.

Mr Bush said dictators in Iraq and Syria had "left a legacy of torture, oppression, misery and ruin".

Turning to Iran, he warned that "the regime in Tehran must heed the democratic demands of the Iranian people, or lose its last claim to legitimacy".

When we get democracy (a real one) then maybe we'll have a leg to stand on trying to spread it. Better yet, maybe somebody will finally figure out how to really implement it!

37. Evangelical Democracy
Is a good oxymoron for the moron's foreign policy or lack thereof. Democracy tolerates evangelism well, everyone has freedom of speech. The converse is not true, because an evangelist can't cram his viewpoint down my throat if I am free to ignore him or tell him to take a hike.

When will the GOP learn that they are in office to REPRESENT the people, not tell them how they should lead their lives?

12. Why would Emperor Chimp decide now
to declare martial law when the Idiot-Murkin-Hicks keep on voting, with the help of the good people at Diebold, for the republicans?

If president crotchsock decided to declare martial law I doubt the the idiots (see above) would understand it anyway. The morans would probably welcome it since they would no longer have to worry about the mindcrippling task of wiping their own arse.

The sad thing is that the joke would be on them since they would be conscripted into crotchsock's Democracy building army. Next stop slackjaws: the Middle East.

If chimpy starts the draft up then I hope these suckers are on the front line.

BTW: Don't be nervous.

the last time this mal-administration made a break from policy, it was for the "pre-emtive strike" policy -

Wow, an expert on the former Soviet Union (does not exist anymore!) and a failed Texas businessman have decided that SIXTY years of world policy have failed. Having decided that, they lead the greatest military in history on preemptive strikes around the world.

This movie plot would be rejected. Where is America when we need her?

...and National Security on Thursday as well.

Now it may be too much to say at this point that it's a reaction directly to Clark...but maybe the cumulative pressure of Clark smacking Bush around - coupled with Iraq disasters and other candidates bashing Bush as well - makes Bush want to be pre-emptive one more time.
