Royal marine killed by Iraqi hostile fire

A British marine has been killed by hostile fire in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence said yesterday. The death of Corporal Ian Plank, 31, was the first among Britain's 10,500 service personnel in the country for more than a month.

Cpl Plank was killed during a coalition operation on Friday, the ministry said. It gave no further information.

British forces are mainly active in southern Iraq, which has been relatively quiet compared with the so-called Sunni triangle around Baghdad, where American forces are concentrated.

The death of Cpl Plank, from Poole, Dorset, brought the death toll among Britons serving in Iraq since the start of the invasion to 52, including 32 non-combat deaths caused by accidents and "friendly fire". <snip>
