Baptist leader accused of soliciting male prostitute
http://www.kxan.com/Global/story.asp?S=4319306&nav=0s3d

OKLAHOMA CITY -- A leader of the Southern Baptist Convention has been arrested in Oklahoma City on a lewdness complaint for allegedly propositioning a plainclothes policeman.

Police say the Reverend Lonnie Latham was arrested Tuesday night in a motel parking lot after soliciting an officer who was posing as a male prostitute.

Latham is pastor of South Tulsa Baptist Church and is on the executive committee of the Southern Baptist Convention. He has spoken out in the past against homosexuality and same-sex marriage.

After posting bond, Latham told K-F-O-R T-V in Oklahoma City that he was set up, and was in the area ministering to people.

79. He says the cop "set him up!!!"
OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (AP) -- A pastor who has spoken out against homosexuality was arrested after propositioning a male undercover police officer outside a hotel, authorities said.

As the Rev. Lonnie Latham, 59, left jail Wednesday, he said "I was set up. I was in the area pastoring to police."

Latham, a member of the Southern Baptist Convention's executive committee, was arrested Tuesday and charged with offering to engage in an act of lewdness, Capt. Jeffrey Becker said....Latham has supported a convention directive urging members to befriend gays and lesbians and try to convince them that they can become heterosexual "if they accept Jesus Christ as their savior and reject their 'sinful, destructive lifestyle."'

...
http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/01/05/lewd.pastor.ap/

I guess "pastoring to police" includes PROPOSITIONING!!! And how CONVENIENT that he supports all that gay "befriending"--gives him an EASY OUT anytime he is caught in what might seem to be a compromising position!! Clever closeted bigot, that Lonnie! But not quite clever enough...!

I grew up in OKC. Back in the mid/late-70's one televison station hired a former "Miss Oklahoma" to do the news. She was did a piece on Anita Bryant (orange juice and gays). She stumbled over the word "homosexual" a few times but by the end of the piece she could pronounce it. After she finished her segment she passed the baton to the idiot co-anchor. He said his piece and sent it back to her for her the commercial lead to keep us riveted to their newscast. She looked at the camera very seriously and told us to stay tuned for information on the latest on a recent "homocide" in the OKC area. Then she smiled like she was really proud of herself for pronouncing such big words. As the camera pulled back her co-anchor was looking away and blinking rapidly like he was trying not to laugh out loud, the weather & sports guys were looking at her with their mouths hanging open. I was watching the newscast with my mom and a couple of siblings. We all burst out laughing at her too. As I recall she didn't stick around long.

on edit: for those who don't know, Anita Bryant herself was a former "Miss Oklahoma"

From the wiki:

In 1977, Florida's Dade County (now Miami-Dade County) passed a human-rights ordinance that prohibited discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. In response to this, Bryant led a highly publicised campaign to repeal the ordinance. The campaign was waged based on Christian beliefs regarding the sinfulness of homosexuality and the perceived threat of homosexual recruitment of children and child molestation. Indeed, the concerns over homosexual recruitment of children inspired the name of Bryant political organization, Save the Children, Inc. Among Bryant's assertions during the campaign were "As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children" and "If gays are granted rights, next we'll have to give rights to prostitutes and to people who sleep with St. Bernards and to nailbiters." On June 7, 1977, Bryant's campaign led to a repeal of the anti-discrimination ordinance by a margin of 69% to 31%.

The following day, Bryant stated, "In victory, we shall not be vindictive. We shall continue to seek help and change for homosexuals, whose sick and sad values belie the word 'gay' which they pathetically use to cover their unhappy lives."

In the aftermath, legislation was passed outlawing adoption by homosexuals in the state of Florida and Bryant led several more campaigns around the country to repeal local anti-discrimination ordinances.

***

Anita Bryant's political success galvanized her opponents. She became one of the first persons to be "pied" (i.e., hit in the face with a pie) -- in Des Moines in 1977 -- as a political act. Gay activists organized a juice boycott, some enclosing two dollar bills and requesting a copy of a nonexistent pamphlet linking orange juice with homosexuality. rest at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Bryant

The last chuch I went to was run by a gay female minister.

I didn't have a problem with that. It was the UCC - United Chuch of Christ.

See you can be christian and gay at the same time.

I don't know anything about baptists churches though, mine was part methodist and I think part lutheran.

They're the church that believed The Bible justified slavery.

Actually, The Bible (and The New Testament) do justify slavery, but that's beside the point.

Southern Baptists were the pro-slavery Baptists.

103. Growing up gay in a southern Baptist home was no picnic, I can vouch.
Sitting in church, pouring over Revelations with one half of my attentions, and listening to the preacher with the rest, I figured I was unavoidably hellbound, from a very young age, and came to accept it as my fate.

Happily, I overcame that programming when I got away to college, and now I'm an adjusted (and informed) atheist. But that heavy Southern Baptist programming of self-loathing is something else, I tells ya.

And don't even get me started on the time I was coerced into undergoing baptism. Yikes.

United Church of Christ is a progressively-minded church - at the left of the line, so-to-speak.

Unitarian-Universalist is probably further to the left.

The Southern Baptists are on the opposite end - on the far righthand side, just left of one group - the Dominionists.

The above was my humble opinion, after researching the Religious Right for two years.

homosexuality is struggling with their own demons. If they just allowed things to naturally evolve as they are suppose to, they wouldn't hurt other families, their own families, and themselves. Lonnie needs an exorcism of deep seeded male adjusted straightness. What an complete asshole. He wasn't set-up on a blind date with an undercover cop, he was set-up to face the mirror and truth. Lonnie is a homosexual that hates who he is. That's the saddest part of it all. The worst part though, is they force their deep seeded hatred on innocent families of gay couples. That to me is unforgivable.

...there is a deeper problem here. He wasn't asking for money. He wasn't soliciting prostitution, simply sex, homo sex. It is funny because he is a hypocrite, but what if it had been a self-actualized gay person? It wouldn't be so funny.

The only good thing, other than they hypocrite factor, maybe this asshole will see what hell he has help maintain for gays, like me, in Oklahoma!

So, he got arrested for asking someone to have sex for free?

Shouting, "Blowjob please! Blowjob please!" in a park should be illegal, but walking up to someone and quietly saying, "Hey, how about a blowjob in a hotel room?" shouldn't be.

Unless that person is under age or standing on a ladder painting something, I guess.

Accosting and aggressively cornering random strangers to ask for sexual favors should also be illegal, I think.

But if all this guy did was say, "Hey, nice pants. You look like a cowboy. Have you seen Brokeback Mountain? Me too. I cried. Say, how about a blowjob in that hotel?" then that should not be against the law.

But I really hope that this guy gets to be the test case that would over-turn such a law.

58. Charlotte NC was doing this 10-12 years ago
It was a big money maker for the cops.

A Cop would get friendly with someone in the park or in the back of the local peep show, and would ask leading questions -- as soon as the other party mentioned a sexual act they were arrested.

The city would offer deffered prosecution with a big fine - but a clean record. Most people took the deal.

Who'd give this guy anything for free, really???

Police say the Reverend Lonnie Latham was arrested Tuesday night in a motel parking lot after soliciting an officer who was posing as a male prostitute.

without a doubt. And then there's TWO AM GOOD LOOKS, where the booze buzz makes the last available trollish behemoth in the barroom look like a film star...but in a motel parking lot???

To each his own, I guess...but that guy looks butt-UGLY to me. Not that I am an expert on what is stylish nowadays...

46. This one of the guys who criticised Jimmy Carter for being "Secular"?
I read in Carter's book where after the SBC got taken over by the Dominionists, they told Carter that they would pray that he would reject Secular Humanism...

Well, Latham, you get to join the ranks of Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker, Aimee Semple MacPherson, and many, many, others...

It's Man's Nature to be sexual. You try to repress that hardwired desire, and, like trying to squeeze a balloon in your hands, it just goes popping out where you least expect it to.

Remines me of a scene from a TV movie or mini-series set in Hawaii where a young child dies of something we'd think of as nothing (some european Thing, probably) and the character who was a bible-burnout missionary who thought Calvin was too liberal said "I wish I could have SAVED it!" his wife said "you COULD have!" he responds "I mean its SOUL!"...

Rev. Lonnie Latham--Another Victim of the Southern Baptist Lie Regarding Homosexuality

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

Soulforce issues statement regarding arrest of Southern Baptist Convention(SBC)pastor, Rev. Lonnie Latham, arrested Tuesday for allegedly soliciting oral sex from a male undercover police officer. Rather than attack Rev. Latham's reported hypocrisy, Soulforce points out that what "informs" his behavior is the SBC's campaign of LGBT defamation.

Lynchburg, VA (PRWEB) January 6, 2005 -- In response to today's news that the Rev. Lonnie Latham, a prominent figure in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) and senior pastor of South Tulsa Baptist Church, was arrested Tuesday for allegedly propositioning a male undercover police officer, Soulforce founder Rev. Dr. Mel White says, "No one should have to come out via an undercover sting operation. That is its own evil. Until the Southern Baptist Convention ends their spiritual violence against gay and lesbian people, tragedies like this will continue."

Soulforce exists as an organization to end spiritual violence against LGBT people. “The false antigay teachings of the Southern Baptist Convention have claimed yet another victim,” said Robyn Murphy, Director of Public Relations and Media, for Soulforce. “Many people are attacking Rev. Latham for his hypocrisy, but instead we should be asking ‘what informs that hypocrisy’? The answer, tragically, is the SBC’s vicious and non-stop campaign of defamation against Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people and same-gender families.”

Jamie McDaniel, a spokesperson for Soulforce who works to change the antigay polices of the SBC, said “It’s tragic that so many, like Rev. Latham, have never been told the truth that they can live with dignity and express their God-given sexuality in ways that are open, honest, loving and life-affirming. Trapped by Southern Baptist misinformation, many people of faith think their only option is to live a dark and secretive double-life. The SBC needs to be held accountable for causing this kind of needless suffering.”

The Southern Baptist Convention, with over 15 million members, is the 2nd largest denomination in the United States. Southern Baptist teachings are a source of misinformation about homosexuality and homosexual people. Southern Baptist leaders also attempt to rally their congregations to defeat legislation that could help LGBT Americans gain equality. In the past, the Southern Baptist Convention simply condemned homosexuals with anti-gay rhetoric, but in recent years Southern Baptists have stated their intention to "minister" to gays and lesbians by promoting ex-gay programs and so-called “reparative” therapy.

The purpose of Soulforce is freedom for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people from religious and political oppression through the practice of relentless nonviolent resistance.

96. NGLTF: Another Prominent Anti-Gay Minister Arrested on Sex Charge
Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 06:25 PM by IanDB1
Press release from The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

A statement from Matt Foreman, Executive Director
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

WASHINGTON, Jan. 6, 2006 -- It was reported yesterday, Thursday,
Jan. 5, that Rev. Lonnie Latham, a member of the executive
committee of the Southern Baptist Convention and senior pastor
of the South Tulsa First Baptist Church, was arrested for
offering to engage in "an act of lewdness" with a male
undercover police officer.

The incident occurred at the Habana Inn in Oklahoma City, which
describes itself as, "the Southwest's Largest Gay Resort." Rev.
Latham denied the charges to reporters as he left the Oklahoma
County jail and claimed, "I was set up. I was in the area
pastoring..." This isn't the first time he's been in the area,
having received a traffic violation there a few years back.

Rev. Latham has been an outspoken opponent of equal rights for
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. And, of course,
in recent years the Southern Baptist Convention - the nation's
largest Protestant denomination - has become increasingly
homophobic and aligned itself with the worst elements of the far
right in working to stop marriage equality for gay people. Rev.
Latham supported a directive urging its churches to befriend
gays and lesbians and try to convince them that they can become
heterosexual "if they accept Jesus Christ as their savior and
reject their 'sinful, destructive lifestyle'".

These kinds of situations involving anti-gay political and
religious leaders being caught, literally, with their pants down
are hardly uncommon. My instinctual reaction has always been one
of smug satisfaction - "serves the damn hypocrite right."

Maybe I'm getting old, or maybe it's lingering good will from
being with my family in Wyoming over the holidays, or maybe it's
thinking about Brokeback Mountain too much, but today I only
feel sadness for Rev. Latham and his family. Homophobia -
directed at others and at one's own very being - is the real
perpetrator here.
