Washington Post Launches Capitol Radio Station
By Freddie Mooche
(AXcess News) Washington - If you don't read the Washington Post (NYSE: WPO) maybe you'll listen to it. At least that's what the publisher of the Post is hoping for when it announced Thursday that it was launching a Washington DC radio station in March as a move to boost readership.
The publishing company cut a deal with Bonneville International Corp., a Salt Lake City-based media firm that owns radio stations around the United States, to launch Washington Post Radio which will broadcast locally and be staffed by newspaper journalists.
Boisfeuillet Jones Jr., publisher of the Washington Post, said the radio program should encourage listeners to read the newspaper. But if he is convinced of that maybe he can find a way to add four hours to a day so listeners can find the time to read the paper.
Jones thinks that putting journalists on the air is going to boost readership, but those that can write may not be all that good at radio as it requires constant chatter with a flare just to get listeners to stay tuned.
