Japanese Stocks Rise; Kyocera, Sumitomo Metal Mining Pace Gains

Jan. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Japanese stocks rose after the Dow Jones Industrial Average surpassed 11,000 for the first time in more than four years. Exporters such as Kyocera corp. led the gains on speculation that U.S. demand will be sustained.

``There are growing expectations further economic growth will help drive Japanese and Asian stocks higher,'' said Kenichi Azuma, a Tokyo-based strategist at Cosmo Securities Co. in Tokyo.

Commodity-related stocks such as Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., gained after prices of gold, zinc and nickel advanced.

Japanese markets were closed for a public holiday yesterday. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average added 38.27, or 0.2 percent, to 16,466.48 at 9:17 a.m. in Tokyo. The Topix index climbed 3.24, or 0.2 percent, to 1688.14, with technology companies the biggest contributor to the gain.
