2 U.S. Soldiers, Polish Officer Killed In Iraq
BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Two American soldiers were killed near Baghdad and along the Syrian border, the U.S. military said Thursday, and Polish forces suffered their first combat death when a Polish major was fatally wounded in an ambush south of the Iraqi capital.

A soldier from the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment was killed when his truck hit a land mine near a border crossing point with Syria.

A paratrooper from the 82nd Airborne Division was killed and two others hurt when their patrol came under attack from rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire late Wednesday night just south of Baghdad.

The Polish officer was shot south of Baghdad as he was returning from a promotion ceremony for the Iraqi civil defense corps. Gunmen opened fire on his convoy.

A defense minister said the unidentified officer died after undergoing surgery at a hospital in Karbala. No other injuries were reported in the attack.

With over 30 attacks a day, we are lucky or lied to that the casualties are so low.

Later this week, Poland's prime minister is scheduled to travel to Iraq and visit the headquarters of a Polish-led peacekeeping force. He'll also meet with the lead U.S. administrator.

Elsewhere, two rockets were fired last night at a U.S. operations center north of Baghdad. No damage or casualties were reported.
