Special prosecutor to probe officials accused of aiding Noe

Toledo- A judge has appointed a special prosecutor to investigate possible ethics violations by four current or former elected officials accused of helping a major Republican donor illegally funnel campaign donations.

Among them is Lucas County Commissioner Maggie Thurber, who has been identified as one of two dozen friends and associates whom federal authorities say Tom Noe used to illegally funnel $45,400 to President Bush's re-election bid. Individual contributions are limited by law to $2,000...

Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien said his office and the Columbus city attorney's office also are investigating possible ethics charges against others who helped Noe. He declined to discuss specifics.

O'Brien said Bates was "working hand in glove with us, and we're working hand in glove with her. We're trying to divide the cases up in the manner that is most economical and practical and we're trying to do the same thing with the feds."
