What essentially he is attempting to accomplish with his ever expanding investigative power grab is to legalize all of the abusive investigative practices that Nixon used with reckless abandon and which were formerly used by the FBI against people like Dr. King and Al Gore Sr. He seeks the establishment of a system where information will be routinely compiled, under the guise of preventing terrorism, against political enemies of the state. The bill of rights was predicated on the assumption that human nature being what it is people needed protection from petty tyrants like Aschroft and his actions prove that assumption correct. The really interesting thing here is that the bill of rights did not cause 9/11. 9/11 was not a failure to gather intelligence but rather a failure by those in government to act on the intelligence that they had gathered through existing means. The solution is to address the failure of those in government to act, not to grant those same people even more intrusive power to gather private information on people.
