Panel drops probe into charges against Baylor regent

Baylor University regents dropped an investigation Wednesday of a fellow regent who had been accused of tipping off students about a campus drug sting this spring.

According to a Baylor news release, the unanimous decision was reached after a regents' investigative committee said there was "reasonable cause" to initially look into the charges but that it found "insufficient evidence" to pursue them.

The regent, Jaclanel Moore McFarland of Spring, has become part of a growing controversy over the leadership style of Baylor President Robert Sloan and the future of the Baptist university in Waco.

McFarland, a lawyer, had been a vocal critic of Sloan before she was accused of hindering the undercover operation. Baylor police had hoped to nab more than the six students they arrested in late April.
