Palestinian receives Australian peace prize amid controversy

SYDNEY (AFP) - Palestinian activist Hanan Ashrawi received Australia's major peace prize on Thursday in the shadow of a row over the award, as Prime Minister John Howard said he did not think she deserved it.
Adding fuel to a debate which has split along political lines, Howard said former Palestinian prime minister Mahmud Abbas also known as Abu Mazen would have been his choice, blaming Palestinian President Yasser Arafat for the failure of the peace process.

Considering the political pressure from Jewish community groups, I was very surprised that she won. The foundation that presented the award were severley pressured with funding cuts and other measures because of her affiliation with the PLO and various remarks that were taken from a woman probably quite angry with the whole Israel-Palestine issue.
