White House won't discuss meetings between officials, Abramoff

WASHINGTON - For the second straight day, the White House refused Wednesday to say who among its staffers met with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff or whom the recently convicted felon was representing when he visited the executive mansion.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan, pressed to explain Abramoff's contacts with the Bush administration, said, "We're not going to engage in a fishing expedition" in the media.
"I know there's some that want to do that, but I don't see any reason to do so," McClellan said. "Well, I think that some people (are) insinuating things based on no evidence whatsoever."

...

"There's a feeding frenzy for transparency and disclosure on Capitol Hill, and that's not a good way to start," said Roberta Baskin, the executive director of the Center for Public Integrity, a nonpartisan, nonprofit watchdog group. "You can't plead national security. The public has a right to know."

...

The Associated Press reported Tuesday that Abramoff and his associates had nearly 200 contacts with the White House during Bush's first 10 months in office.

5. The Associated Press reported Tuesday that
"Abramoff and his associates had nearly 200 contacts with the White House during Bush's first 10 months in office."

On the average, once every business day.

Who, hardly know him, may have met him once or twice.

10. Maybe he had something going with Jeff Gannon! Somehow everything
will tie together in the end. This novel will have three or four volumes. Once someone tells the tale, others will follow.

31. Someone should compare the Whitehouse logs
to see if there's anyone else (Gannon or otherwise) who came and went around the same times as Abramoff. Also, to see if Bush was there at those times and what was on his schedule. But I doubt that all of that documentation will be available.

12. Actually, the White house is waiting (interminably) to see if Jack
already gave the prosecutors a list of names, dates, emails and other evidence. They want to only admit to what they know Abramoff admitted to - they have a big looming issue. It is failing the serious scandal smell test - tell everything and get it out early. But it remains an open question and an open invitation/Pulitzer for a *real* journalist to get a scoop!

Personally, I would like Jack to tip his hand with prosecutors first and have federal prosecutors asking really pertinent questions that make them squirm right before the State of the Union, because that will really be a wonderful thing.

 on standby.

46. I think you have a very good point
and I have been thinking much along the same lines. Scotty keeps asking the press if they have specific examples he would be happy to look into them and respond. They are not sure how much Jack Off has said and delivered to the investigators so they don't want tip their hand too soon or bring up something that might not have been made known by Jack Off. It is interesting how Scotty perceives his role as responder rather than informer of the public. I think they are in a corner and hoping for the best. They are in a do no harm mode at the moment, but eventually the truth will emerge and they will have some splaining to do.

34. The public has a right to know. Our president. Our government.
"We're not going to engage in a fishing expedition" in the media.
"I know there's some that want to do that, but I don't see any reason to do so," McClellan said. "Well, I think that some people (are) insinuating things based on no evidence whatsoever."

Love the logic: "You're insinuating based on no evidence. I can't give you information that may provide evidence." In other words, "We are not accountable to the American people." So, the WH is taking the 5th? Snotty is reserving the right to not self incriminate? That might be okay for his trial, but that's hardly appropriate for the leader of the greatest democracy in the world, the one bringing freedom to oppressed people everywhere to HAVE TO HIDE FROM HIS OWN PEOPLE.
