Release of 6 Female Prisoners in Iraq Could Help Carroll, But U.S. Says No

BAGHDAD Iraq has asked U.S. authorities to release six of the eight Iraqi females in military custody, a government official said Thursday.

Militants holding 28-year-old Jill Carroll have demanded U.S. authorities release all Iraqi female detainees or else they would kill the freelance reporter for the Christian Science Monitor newspaper, who was kidnapped Jan. 7 in Baghdad.

But the U.S. military does not expect to release Iraqi female detainees in the near future, a Pentagon spokesman said on Thursday, according to Reuters.

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Joe Campbell said that eight Iraqi women who are being held by the United States in Iraq are going through the normal process of review to see if they will be released or continue to be held.

1. And they're saying these Iraqis are the barbaric ones
Bush's ego sure seems important enough to risk several innocent lives over. omg. How maddening.

7. I think that's it...
I vaguely remember reading yesterday that foreign news was reporting that they had been released but the U.S. military was coyly refusing to confirm or deny that fact. I almost got the idea, if I remember correctly, that it kind of sounded like perhaps a different nation like the UK had released them.

8. I really hate to say this, but they can't release them now
If they do, it will be seen as negotiating with the kidnappers, which will encourage more kidnappings. I feel really sorry for Jill, but I really don't think they can look at this any different than any other kidnapping.

daughter?

16. Wow!
That was deep, very profound.
They've been negotiating throughout the entire war as have our "Coalition Partners". This girl is from my town. I only fear that they (Bush Administration) won't give a shit about saving her because she's been exposing the atrocoties committed against Iraqi civilians during this bullshit war. I'll just hope and pray that they spare her life.

15. Why does the US have female prisioners? And children too last
I heard. We haven't heard much about the release of those prisioner tapes in awhile. People in jail with no charges, no attorneys, and not recourse. Good job *.

17. Ed and Pub has it backwards...
It should read:

BAGHDAD Iraq has asked U.S. authorities to release six of the eight kidnapped Iraqi females, a government official said Thursday.

Militants holding 28-year-old Jill Carroll have demanded U.S. authorities release all Iraqi female hostages or else they would kill the freelance reporter for the Christian Science Monitor newspaper, who was detained Jan. 7 in Baghdad.

18. The U.S. is the terrorist.
We create terror throughout the world, especially where there's a profit involved.
