Republicans Worry Proposed Tax Breaks Will Drive Away Jobs
Republicans Worry Proposed Tax Breaks Will Drive Away Jobs
By Mary Dalrymple The Associated Press
Published: Nov 7, 2003

WASHINGTON (AP) - Some House Republicans are rebelling against a $128 billion package of business tax cuts aimed at helping U.S. manufacturers and endorsed by GOP leaders, griping that it offers too much to multinational corporations that are moving plants and jobs overseas.

"Who wants to vote for a bill to make cheap imports cheaper?" asked Rep. Donald Manzullo, R-Ill. "It is looked upon as a trade bill because we're going to reward companies to move production offshore. Who wants that?"

Twenty-three Republicans, including Manzullo, have told the House's Republican leadership they don't want that. They signed a rare public letter declaring they want the bill changed.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., acknowledged Thursday that the GOP doesn't have enough votes yet to pass the bill, and is getting an earful from anxious lawmakers. (snip/...)

3. Congress members with brains are far more in tune...
...with their constituents, and see the last election for what it was. Incumbent-bashing.

The Repubs may have gained two governorships, but they also see at least one entire state (PA) go the other way

Most members (excluding Sphinctorum and a few other Bush buttlickers) also see and hear the reality from their constituents. Survival instinct kicks in.

Later,
JM

4. It took millions of jobs moving over-seas to raise the Republican's
I.Q. by 15 points. Now they're operating in double-digit land. Congrats Republicans! Welcome to the halls of intellectualism!

7. I saw on DU a few days ago the RNC is targeting their own "librals"
for the next primary elections....they're going to start supporting more conservative republicans during primaries.

Maybe THAT is when the republicans will start looking into the easily programmed, unauditable, voting machine issue. Until we have ALL Americans calling for heavily supervised elections, and auditable recounts from paper ballots, there will be no reform, and things will continue to get worse.

9. Looks like the grip of the Shrub House is weakening
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=512&ncid=703&e=1&u=/ap/20031107/ap_on_go_co/corporate_tax_cut

So, in spite of the economy, in spite of the deficit, these CRIMINALS in the Shrub House are trying to give their corporate partners even more? What is going on here? Is this a nightmare that never ends?

10. We should boycott all American products...
made by third world cheap labor. Let those American Corporations who screwed the American work force get third prices for their products.

Let G.E. and Ford motor company go screw themselfs. Why don't we replace them by starting a Company that won't bail and hide money in offshore banking schemes.

11. Those products are getting hard to find
We recently purchased a Powermatic jointer....Had to search to find a remaining display model from last year as the new ones are now being made in Taiwan instead of USA. The "new" made in Taiwan have a higher MSRP than they were last year, so the savings aren't being passed down to the consumer either. Just adding to the corporate bottom line.
