Students Sue Over Voting Vulnerability
(skip)

"The Online Policy Group, an ISP, has joined the Swarthmore students as co-plaintiffs to prevent Diebold from issuing additional cease-and-desist letters. Prior to joining the suit, OPG had received one of the letters. "

"The groups are suing for their right to post the leaked memos under the "fair use" clause of the Copyright Act, which allows copyrighted material to be used in news reporting and for the purpose of criticism or comment."

"There is a public debate in the public space occurring over the safety and security of these machines," said Charles Pence '07, the third student mirroring the documents. "I think that issues like these are best discussed when the truth is available in the public forum."

2. so...
the old punch card system is difficult to use, and the electronic system is not secure enough.

Should we go back to ballots that you write on? No, can't do that. It disenfrachises the illiterate.

Placing rocks in a barrel with each canidates name? No. The disabled might not be able to pick up the rocks.

hmm....

I'm at a loss...

4. Optical scan is a fantastic option.
It is cheaper and allows for a recount. Even punch cards are better than touch screen which is easily secretly manuplated. If you want to find out how disastrous the touch screen option is look through Diebold’s own memos, there is a good reason they don’t want them publicized.

Edited on Fri Nov-07-03 02:55 PM by mhr
The complete process from machine design to software development was open for review and scrutiny by the public.

This is the proper approach and solution.
