U.S. Steel Execs Warn Bush Not to Repeal Tariffs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. steel industry leaders warned President Bush on Friday he would pay a heavy political price if he gives in to international pressure to repeal his controversial steel tariff program.
"I just think it would be a very terrible political mistake," Tom Usher, chief executive of the United States Steel Corp., told reporters ahead of an expected World Trade Organization ruling on the tariffs on Monday.
Leo Gerard, president of United Steelworkers Union, said Bush risked losing key states such as Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia in next year's presidential election if he ended the tariffs early.
"There will be huge political repercussions, I can guarantee you that," he said.
