Venezuela To Spend $220 Million To Build Cement Plant;Iran To Help

CARACAS -(Dow Jones)- Venezuela will invest $220 million to build a cement plant with the help of Iran, a project that will take about three years to finish, a government official said Tuesday.

"The plant is expected to produce 1 million tons of cement when it's up and running," said Rafael Lugo, president of the new state-owned Cemento Cerro Azul company.

So far, Venezuela has paid an Iranian cement company roughly $48.5 million as an initial payment to begin the project. Once the plant is ready and the $220 million has been invested, the Venezuelan government will be the sole owner and manager of the new company.

Venezuela has also teamed up with Iran to build a tractor plant that is now operating and has joint plans to build an automobile assembly plant.

20. This thread is making me laugh, but I have a serious question:

If Venezuela were not building this plant with the help of Iran, whom would they choose otherwise? I'm just curious, being geopolitically ignorant in these matters, whether this project might have gone to U.S. workers or French workers or some other country. I'm wondering if this is a "raspberry" snub to the U.S. for its intolerant, imperialistic attitude towards Venezuela and Iran.

Does anybody know how Venezuela usually handles this type of construction contract? :shrug:
