Bush Expresses Sympathy for N.C. Jobless
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 4:50 p.m. ET

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -- President Bush expressed sympathy in North Carolina for companies battered by foreign competition, including the state's textile industry, but said the recovering economy and worker- retraining efforts should help the unemployed find jobs.

``People who have lost work should have hope,'' Bush said Friday in a meeting with students and teachers at a community college that emphasizes vocational retraining. ``The economy's growing. New jobs are being created.''

``There's a wonderful future ahead for people who may at this moment think their days and their future is a little dark,'' Bush said.

Friday's unemployment figures showed that North Carolina's jobless rate remained above the national average, at 6.4 percent. Only six states were higher. Since July 2000, the state has lost about 151,000 manufacturing jobs, mostly in its once-mighty textile, furniture and tobacco industries.

Democrats haven't won North Carolina and its 15 electoral votes since 1976. It is the home state of Democratic Sen. John Edwards, who is seeking his party's nomination to run against Bush next year.

...more at article...

That one sentence about the Dems not winning NC ALMOST made me think the writer was saying that if the job less keeps up in NC, Bush could write off that state.

on edit --- OK I cherry pick the election

1996

Robert Dole Republican 1,225,938 48.73% 14
William Clinton Democrat 1,107,849 44.04% 0
Ross Perot Reform 168,059 6.68% 0

even if you all the Reform to Dole. All it would take is the out of work in NC to push 2004 to the Dems...

1. Did you happen to hear NPR this morning re. North Carolina?
They had a report on some sort of conference with a bunch of executives (mostly in textiles and mfg).

The question came up as to how many of them had supported Bush in 2000. Almost every hand went up.

The next question was how many of them would support Bush in 2004. Almost every hand went down.

Interesting.

4. Easy Math - Even For Bush
NC is considered a Hate State by most minorities. I guess they'll vote for Bush no matter what because the other guy might support those people and their lifestyles.

than Georgia is. :P

How many minority groups do you belong to and why would you think that?

9. North Carolina has a ton of military
Fort Bragg and Seymore Johnson AFB and Cherry Point (Marines) if the military change their voting in 2004 to a Dean/Clark/Kerry then it will be close.

18. Sometimes I am amazed
at the willingness of the "non-rich" to vote GOP. While I may intellectually understand some of their historical views - I cannot understand how they can feed their children on the bible while being prepaired to starve their children of a future, by supporting the GOP and its policies.

Patriotism, the Patriot Act I, II - its so funny, I think that the vast majority of people believe these acts are designed to protect Americans from some foreign enemies. I suspect these acts were passed with America's future in mind. Americans, of all strikes are going to wake up within the next five/ten years and realize what the GOP under Bush has done - to our remaining Social Net and our Government's social contract with it's citizens. And, on that day of the awaking there will be hell to pay, but it may be too late - because the structures will be in place to prevent dissent/change/ or even representation within the government.

Maybe, it is the ultimate in self-hate... we got what we asked for... and on that day, N.C. the "Show Me" state, will have been shown.

Do you laugh or cry...

7. Organizing workers
The best part of the NPR story is the guy who is organizing workers to vote * out of office next time. I mean, he's registering workers to vote on company time! :D

12. "There's a wonderful future ahead"
Because after you put lots of time and plenty of money into vocational retraining, it'll be time for us to send those jobs to China, Bangladesh, India and Malaysia, too!

Edited on Fri Nov-07-03 11:18 PM by cliss
let's see...for every million laid-off workers, that translates into 5% percentage points in the polls. We're at about 3 million laid-off workers right now, so that translates to about 15 poll points.

Tsk Tsk. Better do something, George.

17. Why Worker Re-Training?
The only jobs left will be at Wal-Mart.

Maybe worker retraining is code 'boot camp' so that you can get a 'job' in Iraq.

19. I know where the jobs are!! I know where the jobs are!!
Just watched some economic "expert" on MSNBC's Economy Watch. She said that if you're unemployed, try looking for a job in the highest-growth sectors:

1. Supercenters
2. Warehouse Clubs
3. Dollar Store Chains

That's right, America!! You, too can covet a $7-an-hour seasonal holiday job at your local Sam's Club. Feeling better yet?

She also added that workers should look for jobs in the "luxury" sector, like Mercedes and BMW sales, or boat sales, since the stock market is doing better and, I quote "the wealthy are feeling wealthier."

Whew!!!! So it does seem the jobless recovery was a myth. Thank goodness for the Bush Economic Miracle.

/snark

:grr:
