The national labor negotiations between General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and the United Auto Workers are never easy, but next year the struggle could be among the most complex, important and unusual ever.

Faced with a withering market share, Ford said Monday that it wants to close 14 plants and eliminate 25,000 to 30,000 jobs by 2012.

In November, GM announced plans to close seven assembly plants and several other facilities with the loss of up to 30,000 jobs by the end of 2008.

The UAW has called the actions "devastating" and said they mean the 2007 national negotiations will be "all the more difficult and all the more important." ...

1. The naming rights to Ford Field were bought for 40 million...
For those who don't know, that's where the superbowl is this year. I hope Ford Co. plans on inviting those 25,000 to 30,000 workers whose jobs were just cut.

2. It's Ad dollars, can't blame ford for purchasing Ads
or in this case 1 giant Ad. You can be upset with the CEO's salary.

3. In GMs case
They have other UAW controlled plants which are lucrative. If GM doesn't want to deal I imagine they would be hurting if those lucrative plants joined in a strike.

5. That goes under "marketing" and it's a legitimate expense
There are lots of places to cut expenditures when your company is struggling, but marketing aint one of them.
