Bush Claims Credit for Upbeat Economic News
Bush said on Saturday the U.S. economy was on an upward trajectory and attributed the improvement to his tax cuts, as a raft of upbeat economic news eased the pressure on his administration amid a rising death toll in Iraq.

snip....

``Our economy is on a rising road,'' he said, citing three straight monthly gains in workers on U.S. payrolls, a drop in the unemployment rate and a surge in gross domestic product to 7.2 percent, the biggest rise since 1984, as evidence of the gathering economic strength.

Bush, who is up for re-election next year, said his massive tax-cuts, the centerpiece of his economic agenda, had been aimed at spurring consumer spending and business investment.

``We're now seeing that happen,'' he said in the radio address.

7. "Outlook for Holiday Robust" -- Front-page headline in today's
Richmond Times-Dispatch, a VA repub daily newspaper. Yes, they have their marching orders.

No one EVER knows how the holidays will go. Personally, I hear a lot of people saying they aren't going to spend much, because they haven't got it to spend.

10. Low paying & temp jobs mostly
I posted most of this on the the other lbn thread about job creation.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20031108/ap_on_bi_go_ec_fi/economy&cid=668&ncid=716

From the article:
The new jobs added last month mostly were in lower-paying industries such as retail and temporary employment firms. Average weekly earnings in those sectors are $366 and $318 respectively, said John A. Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger, Gray and Christmas, an employment research and recruiting firm. The national average is $521 per week.

Also, 1.4 million workers were only able to find part-time work, up 27 percent from a year ago. To make ends meet, 7.5 million Americans worked two or more jobs last month, up from 7.3 million a year ago.

So what if there are a few more temp jobs, mc jobs and wally jobs. Basically, these jobs are around 8-9 dollars an hour. Not the sort of thing you can support a family on.

I would also like to know how many of these jobs have employer paid health insurance.

At the same time we see this rosy headline, I have heard barely a peep about how Orrin Hatch is pushing a plan to circumvent the 65,000 cap on H-1B temporary worker visas by expanding exemptions. Those are the tech jobs that actually do create a living wage.

I really do think they want us to be a nation of lords and serfs.

3. Winger Clowns can explain
How Clinton's policies did nothing over his eight year span yet can allow Dumbo to do a comedy routine about his policies affect on the economy.

I think if the Economy is no longer sinking it is in spite of the his kill the Government in a bath tub policies feed the starving rich cronism.

13. Amen, Skittles
This is BS. Heard on the radio today that each month 150,000 enter the work force. If we continue to "create" 124,000 jobs each month, we are still going to be losing ground. There will come a time, of course, when the temp agencies, McDiddlysquat and Wal-fart will no longer be hiring. Then there will be no new jobs at all.

:argh:

Happy that * has finally taken responsibilty for the economy. Be sure to record a copy of his speech. As soon as things go to the crapper, he will be denying he said it and it is all the fault of that pervert, Clinton.

18. And when all of those temporary workers are let go in the first week of...
...January 2004, they'll blame Clinton for the sudden rise in unemployment.

I wonder how many Americans are REALLY unemployed at this very moment in time? How many more permanent, full-time employees will be laid-off prior to Christmas? How many additional small businesses and individuals will go bankrupt despite tougher bankruptcy laws? How many additional manufacturing AND so-called white collar jobs will migrate overseas to cheaper labor pools?

Who else will the U.S. be fighting in the Middle East by this time next year? How many troops will have to be sent to Afghanistan to battle the resurrected Taliban? How many more Americans will die in Iraq and Afghanistan, and when will Americans be told the truth about our rising casualties?

Meanwhile, all of the other economic indicators continue to look bad or mediocre at best...except those that the Bushies are currently manipulating.

19. Message to manufacturing states: I don't care.
Edited on Sat Nov-08-03 12:44 PM by gulliver
Funny how Bush didn't take the blame when millions of jobs were lost following his first tax cut. Now manufacturing jobs show no sign of recovery. Will he take credit for that?
