Poll Shows Independents Leaning Against Bush Re-Election
Independent voters are leaning against the re-election of President Bush (website/newsbio) amid doubts about his handling of the economy and Iraq, a poll released Saturday indicates.

A majority of independents, 53 percent, said they oppose Bush's re-election, while 40 percent favor it, according to the Newsweek poll. Republicans favor his re-election by an 86-10 margin, while Democrats oppose it by the same amount.

Overall, his re-election was favored by 44 percent of respondents and opposed by 50 percent. More of those surveyed favored his re-election in May, but since then, people have been evenly split or slightly opposed on that question.

<snip>

Howard Dean led the Democratic candidates among Democrats and those who lean Democratic. Dean had 16 percent, followed by Wesley Clark with 15 percent; all others were in the single digits.

Top Democratic candidates matched up closely with Bush, with the president ahead by anywhere from 3 percentage points to 5 points.

5. most of the independents are OLD DEMOCRATS!
and in 2004, they're coming back to the party. Bush has infuriated Dems AND the shy old closet dems who drifted over to independent.

6. This is where the election will be won or lost.
Independent voters leaning against Bush is great news, going into the primary season, especially. Our candidates will be getting mass media coverage in this early-winter build-up to the primaries, and will be exposed even further to independent voters.

Let's keep this trend going!!

7. It may be won there,
BUT if Bush is elected for the first time in 2004 and then starts up the draft, then I wonder how much his GOP majority will love his monkey-ass.

God, I can't stand that sob.

I also just just checked http://www.pollingreport.com and found something interesting: Bush's rating in Newsweek polls has stabilized at 51, 52 percent BUT his margin over our Dem candidates is getting smaller all the time.

9. Dems and Pukes oppose and favor he FI by the same percents
and Indy's are at 53% against. It's shaping up to probably be as close as 2000. It may well boil down, again to who wins the most electoral votes, the popular vote notwithstanding.

The biggest problem Bush faces right now is that everybody knows who is: a highborn low character, a liar and a thief.

The biggest problem in assuring the ousting of the junta is that few know who the potential Democratic candidates are. Too many voters still cannot identify any of the Democratic candidates. This will make it easy for Rove and Company to define any candidate in their terms rather than the candidate's. We can't let them do that.

That makes it incumbent upon us to speak of all Democratic candidates in accurate, nonjudgmental terms, regardless of which one each may favor or particularly dislike. For example, don't say "Lieberman is a DINO"; instead say, "Lieberman is the most conservative of the Democratic candidates and continues to support the invasion of Iraq; however, he feels that occupation is being handled poorly." Don't say, "Kucinich can't win"; instead say, "Kucinich is one of the more progressive candidates; he opposes the invasion and occupation of Iraq and supports national health insurance." Provide facts, not judgments. In that way, uninformed voters will become acquainted with Democratic candidates and better make up their own minds which one best suits them.

That is the best way to watch those numbers against Bush's re-election go up and the numbers of those not being able to indentify a Democratic candidate go down.
