House Upholds Bush Policy on Snowmobiles, Development in National Forests
By Alan Fram Associated Press Writer
Published: Jul 18, 2003

WASHINGTON (AP) - The House is standing by President Bush's policies on development in some protected federal forests and the use of snowmobiles in America's flagship national park, despite efforts by pro-environment lawmakers to block them.

The battles were waged as the Republican-run chamber approved a bill Thursday providing $19.6 billion for the Interior Department and other land and cultural agencies for next year.

The bill's 268-152 passage, just minutes before midnight, ended a long day that saw a string of victories for Bush and the GOP on land management and other issues. Included were votes killing efforts to ban bear baiting - luring bears with food so they can be shot - on public lands, and to halt federally financed killing of bison that leave Yellowstone National Park.

"Predictably, Republicans once again aligned themselves with special interests rather than represent public interests," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said after the vote. (snip/...)

2. Yellowstone
Hope you Naderites are proud of yourself!

Evidently, some people in this country think that national parks exist to serve as a playground for corporations and people with no respect for nature.

3. This couldn't have been done
without a great deal of Democratic support. 18 rethugs voted no and 67 Dems said yes. Once again, thanks!

6. solitude is becoming extremely hard to find these days
Four wheelers, three wheelers, two wheeler and overhead jets make it almost impossible to escape
from man to solitariness.

Somehow I just don't get it! Why?

7. More Mountain Pub votes for Bush
This is just the reality of it. Here on the Oregon Dunes we've got designated areas for three wheelers and areas for just people. If they killed all motorized vehicles on the dunes, it would kill our tourism industry. That's one reason Dems don't get votes in alot of recreational areas, when they really should. There has to be a way to protect the environment as well as people who want to go out and ride. I don't know what the rules are in Yellowstone, but it seems like a cooperative solution would have been in order. I don't know that one was ever offered. I also happen to know they even looked at hydrogen powered snowmobiles, but the hydrogen engines won't work in the cold. They're trying to cooperate, are environmentalists?
