Bush* Visit Set to Paralyse London
(snip)

The chaos will be compounded by the fact that protesters are not co-operating with the police in their plans for a demonstration against the two leaders of the coalition war in Iraq. Protesters last night said they will see it as a victory if they are kept away from Bush's cavalcade altogether. Andrew Burgin of the Stop the War Coalition said: 'I think it is a back-handed compliment, because it shows they realise he is such an unpopular political figure held in very low esteem and the war was so wrong. Other Presidents have come here and there have not been demonstrations, but against Bush there will be. The police have promised us we will be allowed a legitimate right to protest and we intend to continue with our plans.'

(snip)

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw last week said he hoped the demonstrators would not be kept away from President Bush, and a Foreign Office spokesman last night emphasised the importance of maintaining the right of free expression. 'Public demonstrations are part of British culture. Everybody has the right to the peaceful expression of their views.'

The centrepiece of the protest will be a huge march on 19 November arranged by the Stop the War Coalition which will go through the capital and end at Trafalgar Square, where a giant statue of George Bush will be pulled down in a parody of the toppling of Saddam Hussein's statue in Baghdad. It will be led by American nationals living in the UK who have gathered under the title Expats Against Bush. They will carry banners reading 'Proud of my nation. Shamed by my President'.

'The very best that George Bush can hope for is to be taken around in a helicopter and kept inside the American Embassy, Whitehall and Buckingham Palace,' said Lindsey German of the Stop the War Coalition. 'There will be no clapping crowds.'

1. I can only pray that the magnitude is such that it embarrasses....
the hell out of Blair, the Royal Family, and most importantly, the Bush administration. I certainly don't want violence, but I hope the impact is enough so that Rove and his media watchdogs can't sweep it away. I want it to be the topic of embarrassing punditry for the next indefinitely number of weeks.

Sorry, Brits for the pain and inconveniencew of having that turd there, but go for it!

What a pair--digusting

Soon to have a repeat in Wahington..

OK you Brits answer this. Why would Blair, a labor person, throw in with the biggest corporate denizen on the face of the earth? Especially in a doomed adventure such as this? Was it the oil??

22. Blaine did not cause that much disruption
Edited on Sun Nov-09-03 08:13 AM by Thankfully_in_Britai
He was a draw (went to see him myself) but he was out of the way of traffic by the Greater London Assembly (a hideous building that I always refer to as Judge Dredd's Helmet ).

Bush is a pain at the best of times and he and his entourage of security will disrupt things I expect though.

5. It will be covered as widely as our Protests in NY next September
Probably more so, since our Government can't block the transmission signals over there.

Unless, of course, they call in the mothership to just evaporate the protestors. Then they will have exposed themselves. (Tribute to "They Live", which doesn't seem so far-fetched any longer).

15. PBS Normally carries BBC World News each night. Watch it.
Otherwise you have to at least have Link (world news) or New World International (broadcasts CBC news). If you don't even have BBC America, you need to switch to DirectTV. Even though my company is technically competing with them, I recommend it for the world channels, even if there are only 3 of them. Better than nothing, right?

10. I'll be in NYC
I'm hoping to see so many people turn out to protest the Republican nominating convention that the lapdogs in the media can't possibly hide it from the country.

There will be too many of us to keep us all of us in their tightly controlled pens (aka "first amendment zones".)

My wife will be carrying bail money for me, and several of my friends. This isn't a game, any more.

12. 250,000?
I'm hoping it's well over a million.

I haven't looked at moveon, lately, but I'm betting that they'll be organizing busloads of people. I can count 20 personal friends who will be meeting me in NYC to let the country know how unpopular Bush is, that he's been a "divider, not a uniter" since he took office and started implementing his radically right wing policies.

It's sad that we can't get rid of assholes like Delay and Frist in a national election. Why do those states keep electing such anti-American freaks, anyway?

(Not to change the subject, but did you see that Frist has announced that there will be no further investigation of the botched intel that Bush used to fool most Americans that Iraq posed a threat?)

I think, and you can slice and dice me on this one (thanks goes to Shockingelk for this one) I agree with him that the memo was leaked purposely. Because of the 'memo', the Thugs have now drawn attention to the fact that they are stonewalling, and that they HAVE somethng to hide.

I have a new saying for these Thugs:

The louder the Republicans scream, the closer to finding out the truth we are, and truth is a place Republicans fear to go.

50. Quakers are one of the most liberal, peaceful religions.
Have a very peaceful and live-and-let-live philosophy, similar to the Unitarians.

I regularly come out as matching best within the Quaker philosophy when I take "Religious Beliefs" tests, and I am an atheist ;)

They were friendly with the Native Americans and helped escaped slaves as well as the abolition of slavery.

like these guys:

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw last week said he hoped the demonstrators would not be kept away from President Bush, and a Foreign Office spokesman last night emphasised the importance of maintaining the right of free expression. 'Public demonstrations are part of British culture. Everybody has the right to the peaceful expression of their views.'

freedom? remember that? used to be a way of life here? something we cherished, loved... held more important than anything? we don't have any public figures with the guts to speak out against the way protesters against bushco have been treated here for almost three years. why not? what's happened to our country?

38. National Get Rid of That Bush Day
Fed up with Tony Blair for always waxing lyrical about war, a group calling themselves the Opposition Society decided to put their words into action and on Tuesday called for women to wax for peace on National Get Rid of That Bush Day.

Posters around Brighton called for other women to join them in protest and to "Wax 'em off, put 'em in an envelope and send 'em to Tony Blair with a message stating...'I got rid of my Bush now you get rid of yours.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/allnews/content_objectid=13600203_method=full_siteid=50143_headline=-WEIRD%2DWORLD%2DTHIS%2DWEEK-name_page.html

48. What is wrong with this picture?
Edited on Sun Nov-09-03 11:47 PM by Jack Rabbit
The (presumed) President of the United States goes abroad to meet with a leader of another with whom he went ot war against a third nation that (presumably) posed a threat to both.

Normally, this would mean photo ops with cheering throngs as a backdrop. However, for his persoanl security, this (presumed) President must keep his itinerary secret.

Bush is probably the only person in the world too stupid not to see that something is wrong with this picture and that something is him.

ON EDIT

I'm going to enjoy this. This will be fun.
