The Iranian president has ordered his country's nuclear agency to halt snap United Nations checks of its nuclear facilities from Sunday. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the move came in response to the decision by the UN nuclear watchdog to report Iran to the Security Council over its programme.
Twenty-seven out of 35 states on the International Atomic Energy Agency board voted for the referral.
The move could lead to possible UN sanctions against Iran. "Because of the resolution of the IAEA... the organisation should stop voluntary implementation of the additional protocol and other cooperation from Sunday," Mr Ahmadinejad said. The announcement came after a senior Iranian official said Tehran would resume full-scale enrichment of uranium following the referral. Javad Vaiedi, deputy head of the Supreme National Security Council, also said Russia's compromise offer to enrich uranium on its own soil was in doubt.
